PROLOUGEWhen Mason was young, around the age of 7, she realized she was a gifted witch. She had always known she was a witch, her parents always told her they wanted her to be a successful witch, like her ancestors before her. Mason accepted this fate and was almost proud of being a witch.
Being gifted was different.
Not all witches were gifted and being gifted came with what her parents called "a bad tarot card." It was a curse and it almost made the extra power not worth having.
Mason's tarot card trait was The Ten Swords.
Meaning relationships around her would crumble and the loved ones around her could get hurt.
When Mason was 11 her parents got her, her very own dog.
Mason fell in love with her new dog. She named him Halloween, after her favorite holiday. Halloween loved Mason just as much as she loved him.
The dog tragically died from getting hit by a car only a week later. Mason knew this was her doing.
It was her curse.
Any boy Mason would date would either leave her heart broken or suffer a painful fate. She dated a boy in high school who was a very good athlete and had been accepted to play soccer at Stanford University with a full ride. In his last high school game, he suffered a leg injury, that left him unable to ever play soccer ever again and losing his scholarship. Mason knew this was her curse and broke up with him.
When Mason, Sybil, and Winola were 14, the government set up a plan to wipe out the rest of the witches; an already dying breed of humans. While this plan worked, it was not entirely successful. Because of this Mason lost her father, mother, and brother. Sybil lost her father and mother but her two twin brothers survived the tragedy. Winola lost her father but her mother and sister were able to escape. Mason took the blame for this, saying it was from her curse.
Amethyst, Winola's mother also believed this is Mason's fault. In her grief and her cold-hearted ways, she screamed at Mason. She hated Mason from this moment forward.
Winola, a girl who was also described as cold couldn't bare to see her best friend get blamed for this tragedy. She loved Mason as if they were sisters. Amethyst wasn't much of a mother to Winola. When her mother was in a drunken rage, Mason was the only one who could comfort Winola.
Unable to watch her mother scream at her best friend, she stood up for Mason. Amethyst at this point was already tired of Winola. She was shocked her own daughter would side with Mason. In Amethyst eyes, Mason was a traitor to the witch kind. Being a mother wasn't something Amethyst had ever wanted or was ever good at. She spent most of her night's drunk and angry. She could hardly look at her daughter.
So she left Winola.
Years later and the girls get ready for college, Mason and Winola are both get accepted to Boston College. Winola was offered a full scholarship due to the fact that she was a talented ice hockey player. Sybil, also a talented ice hockey player was not accepted.
Sybil, a soft-spoken girl, who is never one to get angry or upset. Her getting rejected caused a new anxiety and fear. Sybil had a breakdown. She knew Mason and Winola were all she had left. Her two brothers moved to Spain and had no intention of returning.
Sybil never used her powers for personal gain. She knew if she didn't stay with Mason and Winola she wouldn't be strong enough to fend for herself. She'd get hunted or killed. This was inevitable if she stayed behind.
