"Anyway, we got dinner and then after dinner, I went back to his apartment. He lives right off campus. The apartment was huge and he had no roommates. He lives alone!" Sybil said to Winola as the sat next to each other at a table in the library.Winola looked at Mason who was sat across the table from them. Mason, of course, wasn't listening. She was always focused on her work and working on getting the best grades she could.
"Holland was so sweet, I can't believe he wants to see me again. He-"
"What's that?" Winola pointed to the silver ring on Masons left hand.
Mason looked up at Winola and moved her hand. Her right fingers began to fidget with the ring that was a bit too loose on her finger.
"Oh...It's Reese's class ring." She mumbled.
Winola and Sybil sat silently, looking at their friend who looked back at them. Mason suddenly felt nervous, the silence she was met with scared her.
"What? Do your work." Mason said.
"Mason, are you engaged?" Winola said, her voice not very excited.
"It's not like...Well, it's just a temporary ring."
"Oh my God!" Sybil squealed, causing others in the library to look over at them. "Mason, you're engaged!" Sybil reached over and grabbed Mason's hand to look at the ring. "It's kinda ugly."
"Sybil, Shh! Keep your voice down." Mason pulled her hand away.
"Wow," Winola huffed.
"What?" Mason said seriously, sitting up straight. Unlike Sybil, Mason wasn't afraid of Winola. She loved Winola but wasn't afraid of getting in little fights with her or standing up for herself.
"Nothing...It's just Reese has hockey. We have playoffs soon, she doesn't have time for distractions right now."
Winola wasn't that worried about playoffs, she just was afraid of losing Mason. She didn't want Mason to move out. Winola loved Mason so much, she had trouble expressing it. She was her best friend and she wanted to be happy for her but she just didn't know how to react to this.
"Reese is a big girl. She can take care of herself, don't worry about it." Mason picked up her pencil and began to work on her homework.
"You're right, you're right," Winola said leaning back. "I mean, it basically been four years. You two know each other...I just don't think she has that much time left." She said, referencing Mason's tarot card.
Mason snapped her head up, anger bubbled inside her. This was personal and she didn't know why Winola would stoop so low.
"Winola," Mason warned.
"No, seriously, we all know it's just a matter of time before she dies or she leaves you heartbroken. Just like everyone else before her. I'm prepared, I just hope you are." Winola said, instantly regretting the words that came from her mouth.
Mason slammed her book shut. Sybil jumped.
"Yeah? I'm sure you're really fucking prepared. At least my tarot card doesn't affect my personality. Maybe talk to me about my card when you get past yours." Mason stood up from the table and left the girls at the table.
Winola looked down guilt washing over her.
Winola was a gifted witch like her friends. She was gifted with the power of finding other witches, wherever they were. She could find them just by sensing their powers.
Her tarot card was The Devil. It meant she was prone to addiction and caught up with the material things in life. Winola did have struggles with alcohol but it wasn't that she was an alcoholic, she just couldn't resist because of her curse. Mason did everything to make sure Winola didn't drink or get involved with the wrong things.
