Chapter 14

I grabbed the Miami Wave and read it as I drank a cup of coffee at my kitchen counter the next morning. Alissa edited it to fit my part of the Cary green case and Nikki’s since she handled most of the leg more. We worked well as a team and I loved it; Nikki was quickly turning into a best friend.

I poured out the rest of the coffee and grabbed a soda before heading to the door. I don’t know why I tried to go with the hot caffeine rather then my nice ice cold soda I needed like a crack addict. Zack was about to knock when I finally reached my door. “Hey.” We hadn’t seen each other last night since he really did have to work late.

He pulled me into a kiss hello. “How was your night?”

“Boring.” I admitted gladly. “And you?”

“Stressful. The captain is pissed because dead bodies keep popping up and an arrest hasn’t been made.” Zack explained as we walked farther into the living and shut the front door.

“I thought crime was slow.”

“Basic crime is slow, no robberies, drug busts stuff like that but organized crime is another deal and the boss doesn’t like us to talk about that. It’s better if it wasn’t in the papers.” Zack explained with a cringe as if he just realized his slip up by realizing such information to his reporter girlfriend.

“Is that code for me not to say anything to Alissa?” If Alissa got wind of inside information she went crazy, she got off on being the first with a breaking news article. She lived for that high that she got when her paper was number one above the big wigs.

“Pretty much.” Zack said with his arms still wrapped around my waist. “The boss put me on the Giovanni case; he wants me to find Joey.” He said now slowly slipping into cop mode.

“I might be able to help you but it comes with a price.” I said. I wanted Joey to be found because I had a feeling he might do something he’d regret later out of the grief of losing his father. I didn’t know what Joey did or who he was but he used to be careful, no one heard about it, now Joey’s name was in everyone’s mouth and the cops wanted him bad. It couldn’t be good.

Zack rested his lips on the curve of my neck. “What’s the price?”

I smiled at his mischievous ways that were so apart of his personality. “Not that, I get that for free.” I reminded him. “Tell me how you know Joey.”

Zack groaned and looked at me, all his flirting fell to the wayside. “Do you know where he is?”

“No but he tends to show up where I am.”

Zack thought that over as a cop and not a boyfriend, it didn’t take him long to figure out the best course of action. “I met Joey while working a case he was connected to. We were both looking for the same person and we agreed to help each other out. Joey and I understand each other even though we don’t agree on each other’s life styles. I help him he helps me, that’s it.” He explained as ominously as possible. I tried not to take it personal.

“It just doesn’t sound right for Joey to be involved with cops.” As I said it I saw Zack knew the answer to that as well. “What?”

“Joey worked along side his father and took over the legal aspects. He was brought in on of different charge though but nothing stuck, he made a deal with the boss to avoid jail time. I only know about it since I got involved.” Zack explained to me.

“What’s the deal?” I asked and Zack smiled there was no way I’d get the detail on that. “So what are you telling me? Joey is a good criminal?”
