Chapter 18
At the age of seven my best friend Elizabeth dared me to kiss Zack Myers; a dare is a dare so I did it. Ten years later I lost my virginity to the man in the back of his car, sounds classy I know but hey it was Zack Myers. Now twenty years later from that dare we were seeing each other, boyfriend and girlfriend type of thing. He told me he loved me for the first time. After twenty years of dreaming of the moment it finally came true.
The moment was ruined by the fact he had to leave and my younger sister was sobbing on my sofa. “What happened?” I asked her. Erin cried a lot lately because she around six months pregnant and her emotions were sky high.
“Theo’s not happy with me, I know it!” She sobbed.
I hated crying people because I never knew the right words to say to make it better. Erin crying put me in a bad mood, I left like she should tough it out and if she was crying for serious reasons I wanted to fix it for her. When she was crying over Theo I wanted to kill him with my bare hands.
“What happened now?” I asked trying to be the nice big sister.
“He’s never home. Even after school and work he’s still out, I asked him where he was and he said just hanging around.” Erin explained by the sounds of it she feared he was cheating on her.
By the sounds of it I believed the same thing. “What do you want me to do?” I asked her and I’m sure all the ideas I had she wouldn’t like. She was angry but she didn’t want to see Theo hurt.
“I want to know what he’s doing when he’s not with me.” Erin admitted, she didn’t look like she liked that plan either, she sounded like a needy whiny female. “Can you talk to him?”
She looked at me with her brown eyes full of hope and pleading me to say yes. “Ok I’ll see what I can find out.” I didn’t really minding helping her out because I wanted to know the answer too. “Do you know where he is now?” I had sometime to kill so might as well get this over with now, right?
“Yeah he went to go talk with his parents. I asked him why and he said not to worry about it he’ll be home soon.” Erin explained with some doubt.
“Ok I’ll go talk to him; do you need a ride home?”
“Yeah I walked here but now my feet are killing me.” Erin and I left the apartment after that, I dropped her off and headed back to the neighborhood. 18th street wasn’t the worst in Miami but it wasn’t the best. Everyone knew illegal things happened but they were over looked. As long as you showed respect to the older people and were nice to the kids it was ok. The street was a family of its own, you sometimes didn’t get long but you were always there for each other.
I stopped at the Myers house and a few more houses down was my parent’s house. I got out and knocked on the door. “Sam come in.” Rachel said.
“I was talking to Erin and she said Theo was stopping by, I need to talk to him.” I told her.
“Theo!” She called out then looked at me. “He and his father had some things to discuss so they went upstairs.” Theo came down and when he saw me, I swear I could see him cringe. “Sam wants to talk to you.” Rachel told him.
“Yeah let’s talk outside.” I said opening the door because depending on what he didn’t and did tell me would decide his life. I liked Theo; he was an ok kid and made Erin happy but they weren’t the best pair together and Erin came first so I had to defend her even if it meant hurting Theo.
We stepped outside and closed the door before he asked. “What do you want to talk about?”
“Erin thinks you’re cheating on her.” Best to get right to the point.
“That’s crazy.”
“Then where are you spending all your extra time, you’ve been very secretive.” I pointed out. Unlike his brother Zack, Theo wasn’t a good liar, he became red and nervous when he lied so I knew he wasn’t lying now.
“Will you promise not to tell her?” Theo asked. I nodded but it didn’t mean I’d keep the promise again my sister came first. “I’ve been working extra shifts and I talked to my dad and he’s finding some more work for me. It’s been too tight at home and I want Erin and the baby to have what they need.”
I was always shocked Theo and Zack were brothers, they looked alike but that was it. Zack was a hard ass guy you didn’t want to piss off, Theo was a ladies man like his brother but that stopped when he and Erin started dating and he became a family man, he just wanted to make her happy. It was sweet in a nauseating way. “Why didn’t you just tell her?” I asked.
“I didn’t want her to have to worry, she’s pregnant and the stress from not having enough money is the last thing she needs.” Theo explained and I could see he didn’t want her to know even now.
“I won’t tell her anything about what you’re doing but I think you should because her not knowing is even worse stress.” I told him and we ended it at that, I said goodbye to Rachel before leaving. I was thinking about stopping at my parents for dinner when my cell phone rang.
It was McCoy. “I have some info on that search you wanted.”
“I’ll be at the office in a few minutes. Thanks.” I hung up and I was excited, I hoped maybe McCoy would have some good answers for me. I wasn’t looking for all of Joey’s secrets, just something on him that could tell me something besides his name and the fact he was dangerous.
There was this little voice that told me I was wrong for looking into a friend but I told that voice to piss off as I parked my park and headed inside the office. “I need to talk to you.” Alissa said when she saw me as she got a cup of coffee from the little stand setup in the main area.
“I’ll stop by your office in a minute.” I said over my shoulder, I was on a mission to McCoy’s office. “Lay it on me.” I said when I walked into his office.
“I don’t know what you were looking for but this is all pretty basic. Name, age, job…”
“Job?” I had wanted to know what Joey did for a living since we met. “Hand the file over.”
