I walked up the driveway, playing what I was going to say over and over again in my head. You can't scare her, I told myself. You have to be calm and know that she thinks you're a stranger right now. Just stay calm, and it'll all be fine.

I made it to the door and took a deep breath, letting it out slowly as I pressed the doorbell. Their dog, Maya, instantly started barking, her thunderous voice echoing through the house. She was a great guard dog, but she really was a sweetheart.

When I saw Angel coming up the stairs through the blurred glass of their front door, my heart twisted like a pretzel, tears immediately stinging the back of my eyes.

"Who is it?" her beautifully unique voice asked, her perfect form outlined right before my eyes, only a few solid centimeters separating us. It was almost more than I could bear.

"H-hi, Angel..." I stuttered out, clearing my throat to try and fake my courage. "It's David... from the hospital..."

"What do you want?" she asked, anger and fear immediately mixed into her tone.

"I... I wanted to apologize... I had no idea you would react the way you did, and I'm so sor-"

"Please leave," she interrupted harshly. "I'm not supposed to talk to strangers."

"I understand that..." I said softly, trying not to let the knife in my heart deter me from my purpose. "But I promise, I'm not a stranger. We know each other very, very well. If you just talked to me, I'm sure yo-"

"I don't want to talk to anyone, let alone you."

I felt like I was melting into a puddle, her words quickly beating me down and keeping me there. "I know this is difficult, but you don't have to go through it alone. You have so many people who care about you... You don't even know just how many people truly care about you..." A sad smile whispered across my lips as I thought of all the amazing times we'd had with our friends, all those wonderful people who I basically considered family. "Angel..." I murmured, gently setting a hand on the door. "Please... Let me try to help you..."

There was silence for a few moments after that, giving me hope that she was considering my offer. I knew that if I could just tell her about some of the things we'd done together that she would remember me in a heartbeat. She was my other half. If it was physically possible, I knew that we would share a single heart. A connection like ours couldn't just be broken like this, I knew that it couldn't. It just couldn't...
