'And Terrie is, as always, right. I called for you as we need to talk about some serious issues here that centre you.' Lady Catherine said, back to her matter-of-fact tone.
Rose felt her face going red. If Lady Catherine found out that she eavesdropped, she was as good as dead. She watched tensed as Lady Catherine relaxingly poured herself some tea, not bothering to ask Rose if she'd want some, too. This is, most likely, because she was mostly surrounded by Terrie or some other servants since her tender ages, and what high-class person offered tea to servants, after all?
'Don't tease yourself so much, child. It's not good for your skin, especially around this period of your life.' Lady Catherine said as she took a sip of her tea.
Rose shuffled awkwardly in her seat, embarrassed by the comment the old woman just gave her and upset by the fact that she'd have to wait so much for the woman to get to the point of this summoning.
'So, let's get to business, shall we? You've been under my roof for over a month. I think that by now, you've accumulated with both the people, the house and the way of living, therefore we could now speak more freely with each other, am I not right?'
Rose nodded, her patience slowly coming to an end.
'Well. Since you are, now, practically talking, my student, I must now be concerned about your future. So tell me, did miss Black talk to you about marriage?'
Rose relaxed at the fact that Lady Catherine didn't seem to know about her earlier actions, but widened her eyes at the subject that was brought instead.
'Marriage?' Rose repeated in confusion. 'I'm afraid that she didn't. Miss Black believed that the time isn't yet right for me to have this kind of thoughts.'
'Oh. Well, I must contradict miss Black here. I believe that an unmarried lady should always think of getting a man, no matter the age.'
Rose blinked a few times in surprise; it was common knowledge that ladies should hurry to marry, but she didn't think the situation it as this bad. Why was everyone so obsessed with it?
'But I don't understand, lady Catherine.' Rose said, forgetting for a moment with whom was she talking to. 'Why is everyone so keen about marriage? Why should a girl marry a person of the opposite gender with whom she wouldn't have any sort of connection?'
Lady Catherine let her eyes widen letting surprise take over her over-make-upped face as she studied Rose for a moment.
'Connection? Well, that's interesting to see.' Lady Catherine said amused, as her eyes seemed to look into Rose's soul and back. 'How old were you again?
'T-Ten.' Rose answered, feeling unsure of the talk she was having with lady Catherine.
'Ten? So young and you're making opinions on the world you haven't experienced yet?' Lady Catherine raised her eyebrows. 'I shall have a word with miss Black about this very soon.'
'Oh yes, please.' Rose said refreshed when hearing about her governess. 'Could you ask her about when she'll next drop by? I'm dying to see her!'
Oh, you poor child.' Lady Catherine said, showing a bit of compassion in her eyes, before a malicious smile appearing on her face. 'Miss Black didn't tell you the whole deal, now did she?'
'What deal?'
'She agreed on letting me to tutor you from now on. I doubt that she'd drop by anytime soon to see you. In the end, why would she? I can't blame her for willing to move on with her life to get a position that's somewhat better.'
'Move on with her life?' Rose repeated, disliking where this discussion was going. Lady Catherine didn't mean that thing, did she?
'Yes, child. From now on, I'd like you to forget about miss Black and focus on your future. Understood?'
Rose nodded, before rising to her feet and leaving the room. Terrie, who was at the door, shook his head in surprise and looked at his mistress, waiting for commands.
'Shall I go...' he began but was interrupted by a long sip and a swaying hand.
'Leave her. She can't swallow it all from one bite, but she'll get used to it in the end and she'll come back at me like a lost duckling.' Lady Catherine relaxingly spoke as she took a sip from her cup of tea.
Rose was running down the hallways, not minding about what was happening around her at all. She was angry, sad, and a weird feeling that made her wish to curl into a ball and disappear from the world. As she ran, a memory appeared in her mind crystal clear. When she was younger, she heard many scary stories from the cooks and the servants which eventually paid off by making Rose afraid of the dark. But every time, miss Black would come and sing to her, something that seemed to calm Rose down, and she didn't understand why. She never understood, and she liked it. She believed that if she would understand, the magic would be gone. To this day, the words stayed clear in her mind.
Words are born into air
And quickly fade out in the wind
But they find their way inside you
And they live on forever more
When the skies are dark and full of rain
Look inside your heart
The light so warm and glow
Shining just like the sun
You can see just how much you've grown
How strong you are
Love will open up to you
And starts from the day that you,
First, hear those words.
Although she took music classes intensively, Rose was never able to find out what the origins of the particular song were, but she always believed that the song would've been playing along with a harp. When she asked miss Black about it, she, a very religious person, claimed that the song was a song sung by angels. Rose associated angels with harps, a fact that only strengthened her beliefs. The memories began to fill her head as tears began to flood her eyes. A lady musn't show her emotions! She needed to get to her room now, or else...
Pow!
'Watch it, your' an irritated voice said, before blocking for some reason Rose couldn't explain.
Rose looked up to see into who she ran and, to her surprise, it wasn't some old, sour, servant, but a blonde boy.
'I-I'm sorry, Romeo. I wasn't looking where I was going.' Rose said, trying to get a believable excuse out of her mouth.
'Well... You better do next time!' he warned anxiously with his eyebrows narrowing before turning away and leaving.
Rose sighed, and continued her way to her room in a now more cautious way, without thinking much of anything but her now ex-governess. She had many questions in her head, some of them that wouldn't get an answer at all, but there was one question in particular that would give Rose restless times to come: Who was Lady Catherine talking of earlier that day?
