I feel like the miserable mill is the first book in the series to break off from the format of "kids meet guardian, Olaf sabotages, crazy stuff happens, and then again." And although all that DID happen, it wasn't just one guardian that we met. It was Charles, Sir, and maybe even Phil. Plus we also met Georgina and one of the best Olaf disguises in the series. I feel like it was one of the first books that started to have a different feel. Idk. I'm writing this at 11:30 because I'm bored af.
