"Mom what day is it?" I yelled across our small apartment to where my mom was making breakfast.

"Jade Anderson, you need to start learning your schedule. You are in grade twelve and going to University next year, knowing the day is mandatory."

I rolled my eyes, as my loving mother, Lesley, scolded me from the kitchen.

"Yes mother, and that's only if university's accept me. Now please, what day is it?"

I could hear my Mother sigh from the room over, "Today is the fourth of January, my lovely daughter."

"I've got to get going then, Barbe wanted me in early today to set up the cafe."

"I don't like you working this much," Mom complained as I grabbed a muffin to eat on my way to work. "You should be studying, or out living your life!"

"Working is living Mom, bye!" I shouted as I rushed out of the apartment.

I walked the few blocks that it took to get to the little café I worked at, over on Pine Way. I lived in a little town outside of New York, which seemed to have coffee shops or café's on every corner. But out of all of them, Barbe's bubbling café was the most popular.

I swung the door open to the café and stomped off my boots.

"Morning Barbe." I yelled to wherever she might be.

"Jade is that you?"

"Yes it is ma'am! Do you want me to start the kettle and coffee maker?"

"Please!" My boss yelled from her spot in the kitchen, "Do you have class this morning?"

"Not until ten today." I said as I slipped on my maroon coloured apron.

"Excellent! Nicholas called in and said he couldn't come in today, some cold or flu bug going around. So I'm going to need you to cover his tables, okay?"

Barbe was always happy and filled with joy, I didn't know how, but she was. It kept me on my toes and happy for the time I was there.

"No problem!" I flipped on the kettle and got the coffee brewing, "I'll go open up for the early customers."

I looked down at my watch which read 5:57 am. The normal time I was at work for. Since Mom was on her own I always came in early, to get as much work time in to help pay the bills. When I was younger Mom had always said Dad was on a trip, and when he came back she would never have to work again. But as I got older I learned that he has left her, me, us. And went to some younger bimbo that he had found.

Since Mom was all I had she was all I believed in. Why believe in someone who could back out at any moment and not be there? There wasn't a point to it, or that's how I saw it at least.

"Here comes the morning rush." I announced as I walked away from the open sign I had just turned on and saw our rush of normal customers heading towards the store. "Here we go."

A/N: The first chapter of my new story is up! I plan to continue my other story as well, but the idea for this one popped into my head so I thought I might as well start it! It's going to be a love story, as I'm sure you've guessed, but it's not going to be so clique! At Least I hope not! But anyways let me know what you guys think of the first chapter and I hope you like it!
