It was late Saturday morning when Matthew's mother came through the door. It was a tradition of sorts that Matthew and his mother would have brunch together on Saturdays. She wasn't at all surprised when her son didn't answer the doorbell. This happened quite often due to Matthew pulling late nights and oversleeping the next morning. He had given her a key a while back because this would happen so often. That and when he went away for big philosophy conventions he would have her look over the house. She made her way in quietly chuckling to herself. She made her way into the main room surprised to see Matthew asleep on the couch with two babies asleep on his chest. A blanket was covering the three of them. The three of them looked so peaceful.
"Oh my word!" She exclaimed dropping the grocery bags that were in her hands.
Matthew started to stir. His eyes slowly blinked awake. She could almost see his brain starting up as he gave her a blank stare for a couple of minutes.
"Good morning mom." He replied with a soft and groggy voice.
"Morning sweetie." Matthew's mother said kneeling down to pick up the groceries off the floor.
One of the babies on Matthew's chest started to stir. Her eyes blinked open. She looked at Matthew and cooed.
"Good morning sweetpea." Matthew replied to the child smiling.
"Matthew, who are these children?" His mother asked as Matthew slowly shifted under the blanket.
"I don't know. I found them on my doorstep last night." Matthew said as he sat up. Somehow he didn't move the blanket or wake the baby boy. The baby girl cooed once again softly smiling at Matthew.
"It looks like that child has taken a liking to you." His mother replied smiling at her son with the biggest smile on her face.
"Yeah. I love them too. Mom, there is nothing I want more to raise these two kids. Grace and Shalom are turning my world upside down. I wouldn't change it for the world." Matthew informed his mom looking her dead in the eyes with the most serious look on his face.
"Matthew, I will support you in this decision. You will be a great dad. I know you are ready." His mom said giving him a side hug. "So which one is Grace and which one is Shalom?"
"Grace is my little girl. She is the one who is awake. Shalom is the sleeping little boy." Matthew said nudging his mother to hold Grace.
"Hi Grace! I am your grandma Roxanne! You are going to have the best dad in the world. And we support you in all that you do." She said taking baby Grace into her arms.
Grace looked at her grandmother with a smile. She was wearing a soft pink onesie with little grey elephants littered across the fabric.
In Matthew's arms Shalom began to stir.
"Good morning sleepy head." Matthew cooed quietly kissing the baby's head.
Shalom replied with a goo-ish noise. Matthew removed the blanket from the both of them to reveal his blue onesie which was like his sisters but had giraffes all over the fabric.
"I had to borrow some baby stuff from a friend."Matthew explained as his mother looked at the child in her arms. "I also did some quick research. It broke my heart. They were dirty and cold. They were wearing dippers much to cold for them. I gave them a bath, wrapped them in blankets, figured out how to make two temporary car-seats for infants, called Jason, and took them to his house. There Jason, his wife, and I managed to find dippers and clothes that would fit these two. They also let me borrow some baby blankets, bottles, bibs, some pacifiers, and so on. I also got two actual car-seats."
"Honey, stop rambling. Come on. Let's take you and my grandkids shopping. Then we can start working on how to adopt these two angels." Roxanne said getting to her feet.
