viii. soccer with the boys

THE THIRD bell of the day shrills throughout the full classrooms and empty hallways, signaling that it's lunchtime.

Kathleen winces at the loud sound – it always startles her, although it's one she has been waiting to hear all throughout second period.

She slowly gathers her books into her arms and, like always, she's the last kid out of English. The brunette sighs, blowing a couple of loose strands of hair out of her face. That seems to be a reoccurring problem.

"Boo!" She hears a familiar voice shout, causing her to jump. Not long after her scare, her eyebrows furrow and her eyes narrow as she gives the kid a light punch in the arm. Daniel chuckles.

"Hey, wanna sit together?" He questions as Kat begins to walk down the hall. She shrugs.

"Depends. You don't wanna sit with Ali?" She questions, hoping that he'd say no. Daniel chuckles again.

"Who?" He asks, making Kat's ocean colored eyes roll to the back of her head with a scoff.

"Don't act like you don't know who she is. The girl you were with last night? Ali Mills?"

"Oh, so that's her name." Daniel starts to smile to himself. He glances down at his neighbor and his smile turns into a small smirk. "You're jealous, aren't you?"

"Me? Jealous?" Kat scoffs again while sitting down at a round table outside. She sets her books on the orange table and gives Daniel a sarcastic grin. "What's there to be jealous about?"

Daniel's eyebrows lower as he notices that neither of them have any food. "You aren't going to eat?"

Kat narrows her eyes again, mad at the fact that he'd changed the subject. Then she continues to unzip her bag and pull out what looks to be a packed lunch.

"I came prepared." She replies with a smirk. Daniel nods to himself while watching her open up the packed lunch, seeming to regret his decision of fine school dining.

"I did not." Daniel says, which causes the two of them to laugh. "I'll be right back."

Kat watches as her neighbor gets up from the table and she salutes him off. Daniel returns the signal and disappears back inside the school.

As the girl unwraps her sandwich, she smiles a little to herself. That is, until she gets the feeling that someone's watching her. She glances up and spots Johnny and his gang a little ways a way.

Her breathing hitches when she notices that Johnny's been staring at her, and she immediately looks away.

Daniel enters the hot and crowded cafeteria, immediately wishing that he hadn't. His eyes look around the smallish room, not looking for anyone in particular, which he himself denies.

He finally spots where the line is and rushes towards it, as his hungry is groaning more and more by the minute.

After paying for his lunch, Daniel goes to head back outside. Until a particular sign catches his eye.
