waverly~
Once I solved the exploding poop situation, I sat down on the couch with a bowl of popcorn and flicked on the TV.
After watching the 'World News Fanatic' show for 5 minutes, [my grandfather's favorite] they finally had something worthwhile come on.
"Yes, Ray, you heard me correctly. there are three fourteen-year-olds in the Beguile Aulis Surfing Competition! This has never happened before! We hope we see them do well! Good luck to Chip & Waverly Louis and Amber Clarke!"
Wow. I was sitting there watching the blank screen, still eating my precious popcorn when Chip walked in. "What...are you doing?"
Can he not see that I am doing just what it looks like? Sitting & eating? Well, I suppose only one of us got the brains of the family. And the good looks that I share with my older sister. And the maturity.
"What the heck does it look like I'm doing? I'm eating my popcorn and you are interrupting me," I replied.
Best Sister of the Year Award right there.
"Well, I thought maybe you and Amber would like to go catch some practice waves before the big day Saturday."
"That would be lovely. Give us 7 minutes to get ready and we will meet you at the surf."• • •
Believe it or not, Amber actually got ready to meet us down on the beach to catch some practice waves in less than seven minutes. It was only four, to be exact.
"Hey, I grabbed some chips that we can share," announced Amber with her milk-chocolate tangled hair put up in a hastily-made bun. Somehow, she could pull it off with her [water-proof] sparkly-gold eyeliner and [water-proof] jet-black mascara. If I ever tried that, people would call animal control because they would believe a wild wildebeest had been let loose in the city.
"I will take care of those," I said as I grabbed the bag from her hands and set them down in our picnic basket.
There were no signs of any other beach occupants; a great storm was rolling in and the waves were choppy; the perfect weather for riding the waves.
Chip, my adolescent twin-brother in the midst of his voice-cracking years, was already hitting the waves and had already took an epic fall and was calling for us to join him.
We waltzed [not literally] up to the surf and touched our toes to the foam.
"It's gonna be a great competition, I can feel it," declared Amber.
"So, are you a Seer now? Tell me, do we place in the top five?"
The top five winners of the competition get scholarships to a prestigious school in the California area and win prize money. But, there's more than money involved; the real prize is the glory. Since it's the biggest surfing contest of USA, it's aired on national broadcasting networks. Soon you will find yourself lost in the paparazzi and job offerings; your life is handed to you on a silver platter from then on.
And that competition was only a day away.
I decided to do something besides search the depths of my mind
and grabbed my decked-out-with-pretty-cool-stuff surf board and went ahead and tried to catch a wave before it got too stormy.
Left hand, right hand. Paddle up to the start. Stand up and keep left foot in front of the right. Grip the board with your toes and bow down.
Honestly, the hardest thing for me to do is keep myself steady and keeping the board underneath my feet. I love to touch the wave and to attempt some fancy footing but I get myself distracted and take a plunge in the deep end. Once the wave started to level out I jumped off my board- right onto a unexpecting Amber.
