My younger sister, Serena, cooed happily as she reached for one of my fingers. "Don't eat that finger Serena! It's my favorite!" I playfully gasped when she bit tenderly on my ring finger. Her blue and black mermaid tail splashed in the water carelessy as she played happily with me. During our game of "Peek-a-Boo", (her favorite game) , i drove my full attention to a small ripple in the water. Getting closer to the area, i was scared half to death when my best friend, Nikki, swam up into sight screaming "Boo!" very loudly. "H-hey! Serena's here! You could of blowed the poor girl's eardrums out !" I whisper/yelled as i pointed to the young child playing in the water, Nikki giggled " Stop being a dud Iris, i was just playing a game!" I sighed in defeat. I pulled myself out of the water and layed on the cool rock of the cave. "Why do we even have to leave Chesters Mill ? I really started liking it here..." I spoke sadly, Nikki sighed and layed down beside me , " Many Mermaids are ready to give birth iris, that means we must find a place suitable enough for the young merkids to be raised.". " Still.... I was born and raised in Chesters Mill, this is where we became friends..." Hot tears filled my eyes and slowly guided their way down my face, falling onto my green/rainbow colored tail, creating dark spots everywhere on it. Nikki saw the pain in my expression and spoke up softly " C'mon Iris, I-I think our pod is waiting for us to migrate with them." I smiled and wiped the tears away " I geuss your right Niks." I chuckled softly as she made a face at me for calling her 'Niks'. Serena grabbed a hold of me when i picked her up gingerly to make sure she didn't get hurt. I held Nikki's hand for support as i carefully dove back into the crystal clear lake water, me and serena laughed as we watched our best friend make faces to entertain us in the time being of traveling to the pod. Nikki swam faster than me, since i held serena in the water with me, bubbles invaded my sight as she showed off her swimming skills, i laughed when she twisted like a torpedo. I started to pick up the pace to reach our pod, but i was abruptly stopped when my tail hit a wall, but how could that be? There can't be a wall in the lake, could there? Nikki noticed my struggle from the other side of the invisible fortress . I pounded the wall with my tail and my one free hand, nikki tried to use her powers on it, but to no avail . She slowly put her hand on the divider between us and sadly looked at me, i placed my hand ontop of her's . I examined the area that surrounded us and mouthed the word 'Go' to Nikki as she quickly left. The moment had to be ruined by me lungs, oh no, i've reached the limit of my air. Quickly looking down at a now gasping Serena, i hurriedly swam back to the cave pool in order to help my sister and try to answers my questions about the mysterious fortress that divided me from my pod. I carefully layed Serena down on the cooled rock floor of the large cave , inspecting her body i find the moon ring my mom had left me when she died. I slowly slide the ring onto my finger, i suddenly knew what do for her, i started to sing a old mermaidial tale called 'Mercy'. "Give though thy's mercy and carry thee on, into the sea, the siren awakes..." I sang softly to Serena as her beautiful blue eyes fluttered open as if she was an enchanted diamond, i hold her close to me . Hearing her faint breathing was enough for me to feel safe now that i lost my pod, but the thought of the strange being of a wall in the lake was still lingering.... How did it even sustain it's place here? Where did this being come from? Even though i dreaded bringing the thought to mind, but, would i have to go on land to find the answers i want?
