“Whaddaya think’s gonna happen?” Ronnie whispered to India. They were sprawled out on India’s deck underneath the stars.
India replied, half asleep. “Do you want to know what I think will happen or what I want to happen?”
“Both.”
“I want everything to work out. I want you to be with Jack, Grace with Niall, Finn with Liam, and me with Zayn. Happy endings all around. I want them to be friends again, if not a band.”
Ronnie exhaled. “And what do you think will happen?”
“Me and Zayn aren’t going to last. Long-distance is hard, Ron. Same with Grace and Niall. Out of all of us, you and Jack have the best chance. Finn and Liam might work, depending on where he’s from and where he goes. How much do we honestly know about that boy?
“I sound really pessimistic right now, but they aren’t all going to let bygones be bygones and be cuddly again. Not so fast. Not after all this time. And as for a band, they’ve all branched off. They can’t drop everything and pull up their roots to tour.”
“What about us?” Ronnie asked in a small voice. “What’s gonna happen to us?”
“You’ll keep going on adventures, Ron. You’ll seek thrills and try new things. Finn will try her best to get on Broadway. I’ll become a starving artist and do cheap billboard art. Grace will travel. Oh, she’ll travel. Everywhere, see everything. She’ll be a first-rate tourist who speaks a dozen languages and can tell us the best place to watch the sunrise on the Ganges and how not to get assaulted in Peru.” India turned to look at her friend. “But that wasn’t your question, was it?” Ronnie shook her head.
“I don’t see us staying in touch. We’re so different, Ronnie. We’re not going to stay here. Most high school friendships and relationships don’t last. I don’t want us to be a statistic, but they exist for a reason. We’ll try our best because we love each other, but our interests and desires will take us apart.”
They lied there for a while, studying the sky. Ronnie nudged India’s hand with her own. “Go ahead and sleep, prophet. It’s not all going to fall apart tonight.”
India took Ronnie’s hand and squeezed it. On top of their sleeping bags, they fell asleep dreaming of happily ever afters and friendship disasters.
