Song: All The Kids Are Depressed by Jeremy Zucker
"What do you think it'll be like?" I ask, letting my heavy eyelids fall as I lean against my best friend, Easton.
He sits beside me, slumped in his seat, growing just as tired as me of the long flight. "I don't know, honestly," he replies, resting his arm over my shoulders. I snuggle into him, getting comfy.
"Are you nervous?" I question him. As I say this, my eyes flutter back open for a moment. He stares out the plane window intensely, watching as the clouds pass us by. I can tell that he is in deep thought. He's making that face that he always does when he thinks hard.
After a moment, he glances down to me leaned against his chest, and he smiles. "It's going to be OK, Em. It's just another first day of school."
"This is our last first day though," I say, worriedly. "What if the classes are like, way harder? I can't believe that it's our last year, and it starts tomorrow. We can't miss out on a single thing this year. We have to go to all of the football games, and the parties, and prom."
"Parties?" Easton asks, scrunching his nose. "Since when do you party?"
I sit up straight, excitedly. "Since we became seniors, and I realized that life is flying by. I really want to try new things and go new places this year."
He grins. "Hawaii for the summer with your parents and my mom wasn't enough for you?"
"It was," I say, frowning. "I hate that we are having to go back. I could stay there forever."
Easton nods. "Me, too. Maybe we could move there someday."
I laugh. "Yea, maybe. We could totally get our own little shacks by the beach."
"You guys OK?" My mom asks, turning to look at us over the seat. Her wide, brown, eyes, much like my own meet mine, and she gives me a warm smile. "The plane should be landing soon."
"Yea, we're fine, Mrs. Sommers," Easton replies, returning her smile.
"Yea, we're good, Mom. Hey, can Ashton and Easton stay over tonight? Ash and I wanted to get ready together in the morning."
My mom glances over to Easton, raising a brow. "Sure, but remember the rules."
Easton grins at her, sheepishly. "Yes ma'am."
When my dad hears the conversation, he turns to us with my mother. "Bed time at 11 since school is tomorrow," he says firmly.
I pout. "Dad, I'm 18 now. I know to go to bed at a decent time. Don't worry."
"And?" He says, pushing for me to say the other main rule.
I roll my eyes, sighing. "No sleeping in the same bed with Easton."
"Right," he replies, finally smiling.
"We haven't done that since we were fourteen," I argue. It's a lie, but he doesn't need to know that, right? It's not like we would ever actually do anything.
"You don't care if I stay at Emma's, do you mom?" Easton asks, glancing across the isle to her.
She looks up from her magazine and shrugs. "I don't mind, Babe."
He stares at her for a moment longer, and then asks again. "Are you sure?" His voice lowers. "You don't need me at home tonight, do you?" It sounds like an odd question to ask, but I know exactly why. My mom and I practically lived at Sage's house for the first month after her and Cole's divorce. It hasn't even been a whole year yet, and sometimes it's hard for her to be alone. One reason that we went on this whole Hawaii vacation was to help her heal a little. My mom thinks that it worked, but that Sage still has a long way to go before she is really happy again.
