Molly Fisher. A normal name, for a normal girl. Only she wasn’t normal. She was reminded of that as she stared into the bathroom mirror and her violet eyes reflected back. They were the only clue that could be found in her physical appearance that hinted at her strangeness. Although today, they worked in her favor.
Being different in any way is seen as a weakness, at least when you’re young. The whole point is to fit in, but Molly never had when her difference was the first thing people saw when they looked at her. It wasn’t something she could hide, though she would have tried, if there was anything she could have done to hide it.
Luckily for her, Molly had friends that didn’t care about her genetically inflicted quirks. In fact, one friend in particular loved her eyes...
Taking a step back, Molly admired her hard work. Her cheeks had gone a little red, probably due to her current train of thought, although the colour was barely visible under her costume make-up. Today was Halloween, and she had been painstakingly working on her costume for days. Blood, sweat and tears had gone into it.
A long black dress clung to Molly’s slim frame, stitched onto the back were a pair of long delicate black wings. They were just visible in the mirror above her shoulders. Despite its usual unruliness, her hair had actually cooperated and fell in loose waves around her shoulders. As a finishing touch, she applied some black eyeshadow. Once she was finished her make-up, she was ready. Just in time too, as she heard a car horn beep from the street outside. Molly took one last look in the bathroom mirror. Tonight she looked good- and the costume, along with the make-up, made her look like a dark spirit.
She rushed downstairs, grabbing her coat from the banister as she went past. Molly’s mother was waiting for her at the bottom. She had that look on her face that meant trouble. Then she registered what her daughter was wearing, and the look changed. But Molly was in a rush, and she didn’t have time to change. And secretly, she didn’t want to.
“Bye Mum, I’ll be back later!” She said, planting a kiss on her cheek, leaving a red lip shaped mark. But before she could slip past her and out of the door to freedom and her friends, her mum clamped a firm hand down on her wrist and held her in place.
“I know you want to go out and have fun, but it would be nice if you spent your birthday with your family.” Her mother said, almost pleadingly.
“Mum, if you wanted me to stay home on my birthday, you shouldn’t have given birth on Halloween.” Molly replied, smiling.
“Molly.” She said sternly, but then rolled her eyes. Her grip loosened. “Ok then, have fun. But be careful, and not too late, ok?”
“You can’t tell me what to do, I’m an adult now.” She teased. Then the horn beeped again.
“You better go, your friends are getting impatient. Oh and there’s still one more present for you to open, but you can do it later.”
“Great! Love you!” She yelled, as the door slammed shut behind her.
The cold air hit her instantly, and she shivered. Above her the sky was a colorless black sea, broken only by the full moon that cast a beautiful silver light across the grass of her front garden. When she looked down, her gaze fell on something that was out of place. Crouching down, Molly plucked it from the ground and held it up to the light. How strange. A purple rose. For a second she just stared at it, mesmerized by the beauty of the flower. Suddenly the car horn beeped again, startling her. A sharp pain shot through her hand and she dropped the rose, peering at her fingers in surprise. There, buried deep into the flesh of her thumb, was a thorn. Molly pulled it out slowly, watching a dark red liquid pool where it had been.
