——

Bright sunlight shone into the cave, right into Lance's eyes. Lance stirred with a moan, not wanting to get up quite yet.

"Keith," he groaned. "Five more minutes..."

No response. Lance jolted up. There was no dragon in sight.

"Keith?"

Still nothing. Lance was alone.

He sprang to his feet, searching al other caves, even the treasury. Keith was gone.

Where'd he...?

He went out to the cave opening, and then he heard it: the familiar, outraged roar...

The roar of the dragon.

Lance squinted into the sunrise, and sure enough, what was at first a dot of a bird on the horizon got bigger and bigger.

Below the dragon speeding towards the cave was two ships, with catapults and arrows flying up at Keith.

Just as Keith neared the island, a boulder from one of the catapults hurtled upwards and rammed into the dragon's gut.

Keith shrieked before plummeting into the sand with a thunderous boom that shook the island.

The people who disembarked off the ships were none other than Shiro and Hunk.

Lance watched them close in on Keith, who shriveled down into his human form.

He had seen enough, and went sprinting down the cliff side, faster than he'd ever been before.

"STOP!" He cried, jumping into view as Shiro raised his gauntlet to end Keith's life.

They all froze as they spotted the filthy Latino in tattered clothes.

"Lance!" Hunk shouted, immediately lifting the teen in a big bear hug as both of them cried.

Hunk eased him down and whirled around on the dragon boy. "How dare you keep my friend from me?!"

He lifted his hammer to bring down, but Lance stepped between them.

"Stop!" Lance ordered. "He's not the enemy here!"

"You've been here too long Lance—"

"Lance, knock it off..." Keith coughed weakly. "Let them do away with me, it is for the best—"

"You're the only one who thinks that!" Lance snapped. Keith saw the fear and the anger in the vivid blue eyes, and it scared even him.

"Look, Lance, come home, come see your family again," Hunk offered.

Lance knew Hunk was begging for him to leave Keith, but Lance just couldn't bring himself to do it.

Keith needed him, whether he'd ever admit it or not.

"I'm not going back to Altea until Keith comes too," Lance finally stated. They all stared at him in shock.

"Lance, are you crazy—?"

"I'm not changing my mind, Shiro," Lance countered, not taking his daring gaze from Shiro or Hunk. Hunk had never seen Lance this worked up before. "Either I stay with the dragon or the dragon stays with me."

Shiro thought long and hard about this.

"Fine," he sighed. "But the dragon will ride in chains on one ship, and Lance on the other. Don't forget our original mission!" He shouted to the others who awaited his orders. "Retake Altea's treasury! Search the cave now that the dragon is down."

Keith watched with hateful glares as the humans stalked awkwardly up the cliffs and into his home. Smoke seeped through his teeth as he breathed in ragged hisses between clenched teeth.

Lance saw him struggling to control himself.

The dragon's hands balled into fists, and his purple eyes were dangerously narrow in a dark glare.

Lance crept over, grabbed his hand, and squeezed it tightly. "Calm down," he whispered. "I got your back."

Keith only nodded, taking a deep breath as they lowered basket after basket of his treasure.

After many hours, they had loaded up the lead ship with Shiro, Lance, and the treasure, and Hunk led the second ship, with Keith heavily chained to the mast where he could be watched at all times.

"Let's go home," Lance nodded, as the ships left Dragon Island.
