Back at Wmh Grant Hospital

Julia: You have mails and they are quite a lot. Your lunch is here Dr. Nelson.

Galina: Thanks Julia. Yummy. The food smells divine. From Mama's Nest?

Julia: Rolling her eyes. You bet! I know you love their food  haha. I have juicy stuff for you but finish lunch first.  She giggled her way out.

Halfway through lunch,  I started going through the mails Julia placed on my desk wondering why people don't use emails in this day and age.

The first letter was actually good news. It was from the Board of Wemah Grant. Finally,  my leave has been approved, starting Monday. Three solid months! Sounds like eternity but I love it. Not sure if I won't be bored by day three lol. I'm supposed to meet my substitute doctor at 3pm. Looking at my time,  I frowned,  it is almost 3 PM. I may have to read the rest of the mail later at home.

Julia was not exactly happy that I was going on vacation. One would think I was leaving,  judging from the way she was weeping. I asked her to send my personal stuff to my apartment as I set off to meet Dr. Whitestone.

3 solid months in Ghana! I can't believe it. There's so much to be done.  Buy a ticket,  send Timmy to Shanai's, call Mrs. Bentsil... I grabbed a paper and a pen. I need to make a to do list before I forget something.  I think Timmy will go with us on Sunday and I will leave him there. The kids love him and he loves them too. It's a good thing that Dr. Whitestone will be staying in my house in one of the guestrooms while I am away. Now my biggest problem is getting a ticket. I may have to use Sean's travel agent.  Let me call Sean, he can arrange something. And oh I miss him.

Sean: Hey beautiful!
Oooh, just the sound of his voice makes me want to dance. These butterflies in my stomach must stop their games.

Galina: Hey hon. How's your day going?
Sean: Good.  You heard from Board right?
I could hear him laughing softly.
Did you have anything to do with it? I asked. I didn't have to wait for confirmation. It's got his name written all over it. He plays golf with several of the Board members.

Galina: Thank you very much.

Sean was talking about something but my thoughts were miles away. We had been talking for almost an hour. Sean brought me back to our conversation. 7 PM it is and wear something red. Huh? I managed to say. Ok. I'll pick you up then. See you soon.

Was that my door bell? I ignored it as I went to the kitchen to get Timmy food. The bell rang again. Coming! I screamed. Who could be at my door at this time? I usually don't get home this early so it's unusual for me to get a visitor at this time.

I had forgotten I had ordered pizza. Totally embarrassed. I paid for it and went back to the pile of letters I brought home. I washed my hands ready to have a go at the pizza then frowned,  wasn't Sean picking me up at 7 PM?  I can't eat this pizza no matter how tempting.  Okay I'll have just a bite, I debated with myself.

The next letter is from my dear Aunt Joanna and it read:

Sika dearest,

That was the best letter you ever wrote us. How are you and everyone else? Especially Sean whom we are dying to meet? Our regards to everyone. When are you visiting?

In your last letter, you didn't say exactly when you are coming  but I remember you mentioned you had put in an application for a leave. I pray your leave will be approved. But for Sean, I'd say let's get you settled here. This country would be proud to have you. You know money is not an issue here. Our people can really benefit from your practice.

We have been unable to call you since last week but your uncle got your mail. You know I don't like these your technology that's why I prefer writing proper letters. Pardon me. I was born before computers hahaha.  Our telephone lines are down. After the flood last week, which left a lot of wreckage,  our town has not been the same. The devastation was worse than you guys saw on BBC. We only got electricity restored two days ago. We might have to move to Accra. You know how I hate it in Accra. I prefer the mountains.

The flood exposed the shoddy work contractors do in this country, especiallyin the Southern Province. It's a shame really. Where are the Aboagye Dacosta's? The Blays? The Walkers? The Oppong Kyekyeku's? They were the best on the continent. They engineered some of the innovations in Sikaville. Our Local Government is struggling with them gone. Midwest would have been one of the best like that city in the Black Panther movie, what is it called?  Yeah Wakanda! We are still one of the best in the Southern Province.

With them gone, corruption has become endemic here. There are whole industries growing around it.

Enough of our sorry system.  I would love to talk to you but the lines are down like I said and your uncle doesn't like mobile phones. He's obsessed with radiation and the damage it cause. I hope the roads clear so that we can go to Accra. At least till the rains stop.

Sometimes I find it hard to believe that you've been gone for fifteen good years.  Your cousin Mary Jane had her sixth child last week. An adorable baby boy and a real charmer even for his age. His  naming is in two weeks. How I wish you will be here ☹

I can't wait for your own kids to start popping. Young lady,  you and I have to talk.

Your uncle sends his love. He's here, teasing me that I'm writing a thesis. If looks could kill, he'd be dead from all the looks I'm giving him.

Anyway,  I hope to speak with you soon. I love you so much Sika.

Love,

Joanna.

Ok. I made this chapter longer because the previous one was shorter. I hope you enjoyed reading.
