Sitting on the cut grass in front of the trailer in the shade of a tree, with a large picnic blanket down with Solo sitting beside me. I had Daniel lying against my thighs and his feet against my stomach in a semi upright position so that he could see me as I held his hands and made faces at him.He was a bit moody today, missing his dad I think. But that didn't stop me from trying to make the little monkey smile.
His coos as he smiles up at me had a small smile on my face. A small amount of drool dripping from his mouth and down his chin which I wiped up with a cloth. A babble of nonsense as his reply to my action. His hands trying to push me away as a small frown settles on his face.
He's so much like Owen it's hard to comprehend.
His little face, that scrunches up when I try to baby him is the same expression that his dad pulls when he turns his nose up the smell of some of the dinosaurs.
Daniel's inquisitive eyes trying to look at everything as he gurgles away to himself. Watching the birds in the blue sky and listening intently to the Apatosaurus's as they graze in their pastures- talking to each other as they move about in their herds.
Solo's head suddenly lifts up from my lap to stare down the track that leads to the main centre of the park. Owen's bike engine making a large echoing sound as he drives back home from spending the day bonding with his raptors.
That bike of his almost deafening as he pulls up in front of the trailer before cutting the engine and giving Solo a huge bare hug as a greeting. Solo, jumping up and trying to wrestle with him by using his large paws to bat at Owen as they scuffle about.
I feel like I have three children instead of just Daniel.
"How's my favourite people doing?" Owen smiles as he wanders over. Him and Solo having finished their wrestle and the big dog now going over to find a chew toy to play with. Owen taking a happily squeaking Daniel from my lap as his son reaches up for his dad.
"Hey, big man." Owen coos as he holds his son up in front of him, before resting our baby against his shoulder, holding him with one hand as he sits beside me. A sweet kiss on the cheek for me.
"He's getting so big," Owen grumbles as he notices the small, light blue stripped top, Daniel wears is looking a little small on the five month old baby, "Look at those muscles; gonna have all the girlies swooning, aren't ya?" he talks away to Daniel. A bright smile plastered on both of their faces as Owen moves Daniel so that his feet are standing on Owens legs and is held up under his arms by his dad. His little feet dancing away as he strengthens the muscles in his legs.
"Babababa," Daniel coos as he wriggles around happily.
Owen, suddenly gasping as he stares at his son in amazement,
"He just said Dada," he beams. I just stare at him in confusion, "I swear Zoe, he just called me Dada!" Owen's voice almost becoming pre-puberty squeaky, as he encourages his son to keep babbling away. I think he's hearing things.
"Daaaaabababa,"
"Yeah, buddy. Daaa-da," Owen sounds for Daniel as he sits him down on the blanket, against his legs but supporting his head still with his large hands.
"nanana,"
"No! Come on dude, you're showing me up here in front of your hot mama!"
Daniel suddenly makes a very high pitch squealing noise as he continues to chatter away to himself. Obviously pleased he managed to get his dad super excited about something. Clapping the air loudly in front of him and in Owens face.
"Yeah, clap, clap," Owen manages to support Daniel with his legs so he could clap along with his son. Clutching his hands, in his much larger ones, before leaning in to give Daniel an Eskimo kiss.
"He called me dad," Owen sits up and turns to me with a very triumphant smirk on his face. My own eyebrow raised in confusion.
At what point in that conversation did 'dada' come out of Daniels mouth?
"Daaadaaaa,"
Okay, that was more like it!
My eyes widening as I stare at my son. An ecstatic smile lighting up my face as I look down at my baby boy; his own little gummy smile looking up at me.
"Did he, did he just-"
"He called me dad," Owen almost chokes, before we both burst into contagious fits of appraisal and happy squeals for Daniel.
He just said his first word!
Of all words, why couldn't it have been Mama?
It just had to be Dada.
"Well done, buddy," I pinch Daniels cheeks as he squeals happily in his fathers arms, Owen having picked him up and began giving the poor kid raspberries on his ticklish tummy.
"Say it again," Owen tries to encourage Daniel further. But it's useless. The kid is now more interested in drooling all over Owens shirt and playing with the watch on fathers wrist.
That's his big moment for today done with. Now, he wants to press buttons on the beepy watch.
I can't stop the eye roll as I rest my head on Owens sweaty shoulder, chuckling lightly before taking a deep breath,
"Ew! Go change your shirt, you stink," I scrunch up my nose at him.
Laughing, Owen turns to face me, his eyebrow raised and a cheeky smirk on his face.
"No!" I exclaim, jumping up to my bare feet, my trainers had been thrown off to the far side of the blanket earlier. My light green summer dress dancing around my knees as I take off in the opposite direction to Owen across the grass. Placing Daniel gently into a white Moses basket that was situated on the corner of the blanket, in the shade of the tree, Owen jumped to his feet and began chasing down my retreating figure.
Laughing as I glance over my shoulder, my highlighted hair catching in the golden rays of the setting sun, a small squeal escapes my lips as I note how close Owen is as he charges after me.
"Owen!" I shriek, laughter quickly bubbling past my smiling lips as he catches me in his arms. Sweeping me off my feet into his hold against his chest, spinning us around in circles and burying his head into the crook of my neck where he rubs his scratchy stubble on my exposed skin. My cheeks illuminating in a bright crimson
Solo unsure whether to chase after us and leave Daniel; eventually sitting back down beside the baby to watch over him as if he were his own.
Placing my feet gently onto the tickling grass, Owen spins me round so that my wrists are trapped between our chests and his hands are around my waist. Not a single bad thought racing through my head at his caging hold.
Smiling up at him, Owen leans down and captures my lips with his plump ones. Both of our breathing slightly elevated at our previous sprinting and laughing. The kiss sweet and delicate as his hands on my hips pull me a little closer. My hands snaking their way up his broad chest and into the wisps of hair at the back of his neck.
"Owen," I gasp as we pull away, our foreheads resting against each other, "You really do stink," I laugh. Owen, closing his eyes in exasperation.
"Damn, woman," he curses as he kisses my forehead and takes my hand in his as we stroll back towards a now sleepy Daniel who is dozing in his basket.
"Finally," I sigh as Owen bends down to pick up our nearly sleeping baby in his basket. Small grumblings of protest from the little monkey at the movement.
Leaning down, I grab the blanket and my unread book- Daniel too fussy to get a page read this afternoon- as well as my trainers before following Owen inside the trailer. The small porch door open for us to wander straight in and set my book on the coffee table.
"I'll be ten minuets," Owen says as he leaves the bedroom- Daniel settled in his own cot- as he wanders over to give a small kiss on my cheek before heading into the bathroom. His head popping back round the door frame just for a smug smile of his,
"He called me dad first, ha!"
