Silas visited Amber in jail. There was a bunk bed in which her fellow cellmate, an unattractive twenty- something woman wearing a ponytail, was lying on the top bed. Silas looked at Amber. She was looking repentant in her yellow shirt. Her beauty still radiated in her sad face. He came closer to the bars.
"I'm here to tell you that everything I felt for you was real even though you never loved me back. But that was in the past. I love Salome and I want to get her back."
"So, you're breaking up with me? I understand. I am a horrible person!" She cried.
"No, you're not."
"Yes, I am. I killed tons of people."
"But that was when you were... that thing. You are a different person now. I can see in your eyes that you have a good heart."
Amber let out a sad chuckle. "Thank you for saying that. It's the first time someone told me that."
Silas reached out his hand inside and touched Amber's cheek. "I want you to know that it's not too late. You can still do good things for people."
"Yes, I can. But that won't undo my crimes."
"Don't be so harsh on yourself," Silas said in a gentle voice. She smiled weakly.
After a few moments, Silas said, "I just want to ask you: Did Robert know what you were?"
"No. He was just one of my clients."
Silas knew that Amber was telling the truth.
