2. 2016 Vibes

"I'll see you guys tomorrow," Mr. Thompson said, after the bell rang dismissing us. He might have been a stickler but he respected the bell for sure, unlike most teachers here who believe the bell had no significance and that they had rule over when to dismiss us.

"Oh, Kelsey?" Mr. Thompson said, grabbing my attention. I was mid-packing my backpack. "Can I see you for a moment?"

My heart started beating faster at his suggestion. Oh, no, I thought, he's gonna write me up. I'm gonna get detention. Oh, fuck me. But I nodded anyway and continued packing. I looked up at Harry, my eyes catching his.

"Hey Harry? Can you wait for me outside? Thompson wants to grill me, but I should be out there soon," I told him, zipping up my bag.

He slung his bag over his shoulder and gave me a nod. "Yeah. I'll be outside," he said before leaving me there.

I turned toward Tamara, catching her eye. "Go outside and wait for me. Harry should be there. Thompson wants to chew me out, so that should enough time to get your flirt on, right?" I asked her.

"Oh my god, I love you," she said, skirting past me and toward the exit. I smirked and shook my head before making my way over to Mr. Thompson's desk.

He was sitting down, readjusting papers, and even though I was standing before him, he waited til the class was empty. Once it was, he cleared his throat.

"Kelsey," he began, crossing his arms and leaning forward on them. "What is the problem? You were so distracting today. I have a class to teach, and I can't do that when you spend the majority of the class time talking. You were doing so well."

I sighed and shrugged. "I'm sorry, Mr. Thompson. I really am. I know I'd gotten better. I really don't know what came over me, but I can promise to try harder tomorrow to keep it calm. Scouts' Honor," I said, holding up my hand.

He shook his head. "Were you even a Girl Scout?"

I gave him a shrug and a weak smile. "For like a day, by then I made my mom take me out because the girls were so..."

"Catty?" he offered.

"I was gonna say dumb," I finished, "but catty works, too, I guess."

Mr. Thompson scoffed at my remark before giving me a dismissive wave. "Get out of here, Williams. I expect better behavior tomorrow, or else, I'm calling home."

I gave him a curt nod. "Sir, yes, sir."

And with that, I made my leave. Outside the classroom, I found my cousin doing her best to flirt with our new transfer student, but from the looks of it, poor girl was really striking out.

"Hey guys," I said, breaking through the awkward tension. "I see you've met each other."

"Yeah," Tamara said, tossing her hair behind her shoulder. "We were just talking about lunch—what they're serving today. Told Harry Boy to stay clear of the chicken surprise before he wound up with a surprise of his own," she said with a laugh.

I chuckled before turning to Harry. "She's right. We've pretty much concluded that anyone who willingly gets the chicken surprise has a stomach of steel or is secretly evil," I told him.

He laughed, pushing his hair out of his face. "I'll take your words for it," he stated. He adjusted his backpack and gestured at me. "So when are you free this week. We can start working on something for the project," he offered.

Tamara and I started walking down the hall toward our next class, Harry catching the hint and following us.

"Uhm," I said, scratching the back of my neck. "I'm free this Thursday after school  and Saturday morning til 2pm. Does either work for you?"
