In essence, Karkaina are masks of magical power. Karkaina are very common, but no two are alike, though two Karkana may give similar abilities. The Karkaina Heraldra, for example, allows the user to amplify the target's sense of hearing. The drawback to using Karkaina is that they drain the user's magical reserves, but some drain magic faster than others.
Karkaina is the Iceshallow word for ''mask''.

Currently, there are over 2000 known Karkaina, each with different powers. These powers range from resistance of disease to the ability to hear the whispers of the dead, though there is one in particular that causes the wearer to go completely and utterly insane, but increases their fighting skill one-hundred fold.
