mallory's pov

***

The evening breeze blew through the window, thrashing my curtains around. I was sitting on the roof, drinking a can of pink lemonade and watching the sunset. It was these moments that I cherished, these moments that I wouldn't get to enjoy during the school year, because I was studying or at volleyball practice.

It was the final week of summer, and I sure as hell wasn't ready to go back to school. I didn't want to sit in musty classrooms, didn't want to copy chemistry notes from the board, and certainly didn't want to see the faces of those people who make high school a living hell.

I was lost in my thoughts when suddenly, I heard footsteps on the roof, causing me to jump and slide towards the bottom. I clawed the asphalt, chipping my nails in the process as I stopped moving and heaved myself back up.

"Damn, Mal, I didn't mean to scare you", I heard a familiar voice.

"Grayson!" I shrieked, running up the incline to the flat part of my roof and throwing myself into his embrace.

He hugged me back immediately. I squeezed my arms around him tighter and he began to laugh. When I finally released, he started fake coughing, causing me to punch him on the arm.

"I missed those hugs", he said, still coughing and laughing.

"I missed you too, I guess", I giggled.

Grayson and I have been best friends since 3rd grade, after he offered me the other half of his peanut butter and honey sandwich. no one in the class liked peanut butter and honey, but I did, and that's how Grayson and I started bonding. From there, our friendship blossomed, and we were now entering our senior year of high school together.

He was away at his football training camp for most of the summer, along with his twin brother, Ethan. It sucked because I wasn't able to hang out with him at all, but our other friends, like Rose, Charlie, and Anastasia spent time with me over the summer and we got a lot closer.

"So, what did I miss this summer?", he asked, cracking open his can of pink lemonade that he got from my fridge.

"You missed Alice's big 4th of july party, Charlie got so wasted that she conviced herself that an airplane was a UFO", I laughed, pink lemonade coming out of my nose at the memory.

"She's a wild one, Charlie. how's Alice? still giving you trouble?", Grayson asked.

"The only thing she said to me at the party was to 'have a good time', but she said it in a way where you knew she was kidding", Alice was the leader of the most powerful clique in our grade. Anything she says, goes, whether you like it or not. She convinced everyone that I had an STD freshman year, which basically meant the whole school turned against me. Although that rumor blew over, my status definitely changed.

"Just don't pay her any mind and she'll leave you alone, for the most part", Grayson suggested.

"Easy for you to say! You're a regulation hottie, you can get anyone to fall for you", I said.

Including me.

Did I mention that I was in love with my best friend?

It happened after that whole STD rumor, Grayson consoled me through everything, and that's when I realized that our friendship meant more to me. That didn't mean I was going to do anything, though. I didn't want to jeopardize our friendship if he didn't feel the same way.

So, I silently pine for him from afar.

"Speaking of which", he started, "I met up with Brinley Jacobs at camp because cheer camp was right across the lake, and I totally hooked up with her", he smirked.

"You did not!" I said playfully, however I obviously felt a tinge of jealousy.

"Totally did! She's a really good kisser", he laughed.

"I wish I could have spontaneous camp hookups", I huffed and crossed my arms.

"You'll find a guy soon enough, you can always have ethan", Grayson snorted.

"As if I'm going to hook up with my best friend's brother!"

"Isn't there a song about that?"

"Not the point!" I punched him.

The rest of that evening consisted of him telling me about all the pranks he pulled at camp, and I told him about all the adventures that Rose, Charlie, Anastasia and I went on. It felt good to talk to him, It was natural and it came so easy.

"Mal, it's late, I should be heading home", he said.

"Let's go to breakfast tomorrow, yeah? You, me, Rose and Ethan?"

"That sounds great", he smiled.

We climbed back into my room, exchanged hugs, and he left closing the door. I flopped down on my bed, not bothering to change as I was wearing a big black hoodie and boy shorts anyways. I snuggled myself under the covers and drifted off slowly, smiling at the thought of my best friend being home.

***

I woke up to the sound of an annoying ringtone and I realized it was someone calling me.

"Hello?" I answered, still disoriented due to the fact that i just woke up.

"Hey sleepyhead, I'm in your driveway", I could hear the smile in Grayson's voice

"Shit! I'll be out in a second" I cursed, hanging up and rolling out of bed. I threw on a pastel pink halter top and a blue jean skirt, sliding on a pair of white vans and tossing my hair up into a messy bun. I brushed my teeth, sprayed perfume, applied some chapstick and swiped on mascara as I clutched my wallet and flew out the door.

I climbed into the backseat, sitting next to Rose as Grayson and Ethan were sitting up front.

"You picked me up last because you knew I'd sleep in, didn't you?" I squinted my eyes at Grayson.

"I've known you for almost 10 years, of course I knew you were going to sleep in", Grayson chuckled. He put the car in reverse and began driving towards downtown.

He parked at the local cafe and we all climbed out and walked inside, sitting in a booth towards the back. The waitress came around and got our drink orders and we began talking again.

"Is that Alice walking towards us?" Rose pointed and sure enough, there was Alice and her two minions, Jenny and Yvette following behind her, and they were coming to our booth.

"Well, well, well, the Dolans are back from camp to finally grace us with their presence", Alice put on a fake smile and waved at us.

"Hey Alice, how are you?" Grayson said, with Ethan nodding in agreement.

"Not too bad, not too bad. You're all coming to my end of summer party on sunday night, right?" She stared at all of us.

"Yep! We wouldn't miss it, right Mallory?" Grayson raised his eyebrow at me.

"Of course", I said, taking a sip of my orange juice.

"Wonderful, I'll see you all there! Toodles", She motioned for Jenny and Yvette to follow her and they left the cafe.

"Ugh, another party", I groaned, slamming my head on the table.

"Hey, at least E and I will be at this one", Grayson rubbed small circles on my back to comfort me.

"That's true"

"Plus, it's a party, what could go wrong?"
