"hey, mali. where are you?" i asked into the phone as i let my feet glide over the moist grass.

"i'm at home. i'm sick, so i'm afraid i can't make it." she coughed, making it obvious that she was telling the truth. not that i thought she wasn't.

as every tuesday, we had planned to meet up at 9 a.m sharp to take our dogs and the ones we pet-sat for our neighbors out for their morning walk. about half a year ago, i had started dog-sitting and i loved it. plus it was an easy way to make some money while saving up for college. it was a win-win situation.

"i know you hate being on your own though, so i send my brother instead. he has a day off today, so he's free to join you." she explained and i nodded. when i realised she actually couldn't see me, i spoke up again.

"okay, cool." i said patting doggy, my 14 year old cocker spaniel that sat quietly in my lap. "he's taking duke with him, isn't he?" i asked hoping i didn't have to miss out on the small boy, now that mali wasn't feeling good enough to take her dog out as well.

"he's actually calum's dog, so he took him with him. they left a few minutes ago so they should be over soon." she explained coughing again. "i'll hang up now. my bubble bath is ready. i hope you don't mind spending time with my brother though. he can be a bit annoying at times."

"nah, it's fine. get well soon."

"we'll see. bye."

with that she hung up leaving me in total silence as i was staring at all the dogs playing on the grass. since it was early in the day, there weren't many people around the park. none, to be precise, since most of the dog holders were at work and their kids at school. as much as i hated having to go out with the dogs on my own, i loved not having many total strangers around.

it took about 5 more minutes till i noticed a boy entering the park, 4 dogs on leashes accompanying him. i knew each one of them and normally, when mali was taking them out, they were going wild. they would be dragging her into the park, eager to get to play with their mates, but this time, they were silently walking besides the boy.

he had some of mali's feature which gave me the last clue that he was indeed her little brother, calum.

"hey, you must be calum." i greeted him, holding a hand out for him to shake. "i'm y/n."

"hey." he simply said, shaking my hand and then taking the leashes off of every dog one after another. they stood still until he motioned for them to get their butts over to their friends.

"wow, who are you trying to impress?" i asked him in a joking manner. he sat down besides me, just the smallest of smiles on his lips. still, there were about a dozen dimples showing.

"to be fair, when mali told me about you, she didn't mention how cute you were." he answered jokingly. i already liked him, only for his sweet sense of humour.

"well, she didn't mention you were such a charmer either. seems like there's a surprise for both of us." i leaned down to pat duke, mali's, or - as i just had found out - calum's dog that had been standing at my feet for a few seconds to get his weekly belly rub.

"and who's that little buddy here?" calum asked rubbing my dog's chin and throat, which most dogs loved. he was getting the cutest of reactions when doggy pressed his face up against calum's hand.
