The time between the classes of Jefferson high school did not seem like enough time to Kenna Hendricks. To her it seems like she is late to every class because there just isn't enough time to grab the required books.
"Kenna!" Screeched the batty old English teacher as she waved a boney finger. "This is the fourth day in a row that you have been late to my lesson!" "I'm sorry Mrs. Lou. But it wasn't my fault! My locker wouldn't open an-" "That's enough! I don't care what your excuse is. Detention. After school. Two hours!"
Everybody knew that when you messed with Mrs. Lou, who everyone called the bat, you got detention that was at least two hours long. Kenna's eyes widened.
"Please can I do one hour today and one tomorrow? I have a dance recital today and can't miss!"
The old lady took pity to fellow dancers as she was once one herself.
"Fine but tomorrow you get two hours plus the one hour today." Kenna walked into the classroom and plopped down into the seat next to her best friend, Jess.
"Whatchya doin after school today? Because I know that we don't have a recital." Kenna grinned but her smile faltered after a few seconds. "Going to the oak tree." Jess nodded, understanding. "Alright just be careful." The two girls shared a deep bond that formed when they were just children. They both suffered the same life changing tragedy.
*FLASHBACK*
"Mommy! When are we going to leave?!" Young Kenna wined jumping up and down. "As soon as Jessy and her mom get her honey."
Tracy swept her daughter up and held her in a tight hug. "I love you boo bear." She kissed her head and buckles her into the car as the others climbed in. They were driving down the road, camping supplies in back, when bright lights and a loud horn was engulfing the small car. "Mommy!"
*BACK TO THE PRESENT*
Kenna walked to the big red barn and opened the stall of her favorite horse, Honey. "Hey Honey. Wanna go for a ride?"
Her and her horse took off down the dirt trail that led to a secret meadow. The meadow was hidden by a thick forrest that had multiple false trails. It was nearly impossible to find. It was her spot.
Kenna dismounted her horse, tied the rope to a low branch, and walked up to the large oak tree that rested in the middle of the small field and began to climb to her favorite spot.
All of a sudden, a twig snapped in the distance. The horse picked its head up and looked in that direction, but dismissed the sound. Kenna however, did not. Another twig snapped and another then another. The knife that she had brought was in the saddle bag and it was very tempting to grab. Kenna squatted on the tree branch and peered into the forest. It was quiet. To quiet.
"Hey." Someone whispered in her ear. She screamed, lost her footing, and fell, grabbing the branch. Honey whined below her, not able to get below the struggling teen.
Kenna's breathing became heavy as she struggled to pull herself up. Her grip was failing and she was starting to slip. As she wasn't able to hold on any longer and she started to fall, the mysterious stranger caught her arm and hauled her up.
"Get away from me!" He frowned. "A thank you would work. I mean, you could have died. The horse would never have been able to get under you with the way you tied that rope, and its about a 30 foot drop." Kenna rolled her eyes and pushed past the handsome boy.
"Thanks. Now move." She untied the rope from the tree, put the knife in her boot, and mounted her horse. "What you think I'm going to hurt you?" "We are in the middle of nowhere, alone. No I don't but I'm not taking a chance. Goodbye." She pulled on the reign and Honey went into a gentle trot. "Wait I don't know your name!" He shouted. "Kenna!" "Nice to save you Kenna. I'm Criss."
