The tears forming in your eyes were clouding your vision. Your throat ached and your heart felt like it was breaking into a billion tiny pieces in your chest. The sobs were threatening to rip out from your mouth.

Damon watched as the woman he loved more than anything broke down in front of him.

He felt helpless.

He was the reason why you were crying.

"(Y/n)..." he breathed out. The tears that he had been holding back were starting to break through.

"Don't," you cried, "Please don't say another word."

Damon's hands cupped your face. The feeling of his hands on you made you want to cry more. "I'm doing this for your own good. I'm not safe to be around."

"Don't say that! Please, don't. I've always been safer when I'm with you!"

"Things have changed."

Just a few hours before, you and Damon had been out when a couple of unknown vampires crossed your path. You were human and sort of useless against them. You ended up getting bitten by one of them while Damon was trying to fight the other two. Your screams had shaken Damon down to his core. He managed to get to you in time and fed you some of his blood. You had lost a lot of your own and it scared Damon to see you limp and almost lifeless.

More and more vampires had started travelling into Mystic Falls. Damon had begun to realize that just by being in his company, you were at risk.

"You were supposed to be my forever!" You sobbed, "You promised me that you would never leave me! You promised that we would be together forever."

Damon promised to change you when you were ready. When you first met Damon Salvatore, it was like you had come alive. He made you feel safe but yet being with him felt dangerous. You liked living on the edge and the rush of adrenaline you got.

The thought of not being with him anymore crushed you.

Damon couldn't put you in harm's way anymore. The thought of you getting hurt because of him would destroy him. He would rather you be safe than to be with him.

He grabbed the clasp of the necklace that he gave you and unhooked it from the back of your neck. It was the necklace he had given you to protect you from ever getting compelled. Ironic at the situation you were in.

He lifted your chin lightly so that you would look him in the eyes. You knew what he was about to do. You knew he was going to compel you to forget.

"I want you to forget about what happened tonight. I want you to forget that you know anything about vampires or supernatural creatures. Forget and have a happy and normal life. Forget that we ever even knew each other. Forget me."

You had gone into a trance as he spoke. You stopped crying immediately. Damon kissed the top of your head softly before letting go of you completely and for good.

He knew it was for the best, but that didn't stop it from breaking his heart. He hoped that one day when things were safer, he could be reunited with you.

You were his epic love.

And love as epic and romantic as yours belonged together.
