Doppelgängers. The Originals. The race for the Cure. Heretics. Gemini Coven.

Damon Salvatore and his friends had seemed to have been through it all. Way more than what regular people would ever have to go through. But of course, they weren't regular people. They were dead. Well, some of them.

Including you.

You were a new vampire still trying to get used to it all. You turned after a freak accident. You had vampire blood in your system from earlier in the day and the rest was history.

The one thing that you were trying to get used to was the bloodlust. You felt yourself craving it practically all day. Your friends were helping you learn how to control it all so that you wouldn't hurt innocent people.

The one who helped the most was Damon. Your Damon. Well, he wasn't technically your Damon but you wished that he was. The two of you had been friends for a really long time. It hadn't always been an easy friendship but you were grateful that you had him.

Damon was like the light through all of the darkness. He was your safe place. When fears of doubt and hopelessness crept in, he would say exactly what you needed to hear to get through it.

You were there when he needed you too. You stood by as you watched him pine and fall in love with his brother's girl, Elena. It killed you inside to see him so hurt when she eventually chose to be with Stefan. You didn't know what words to string together to make him feel better. All you knew that you could do was be by his side while he struggled with his feelings.

You wished that one day he would open his eyes and see that you had been there all along.

It had been a normal Saturday morning when you found yourself heading towards the Salvatore Boarding House. It felt a little odd that there wasn't anything to do. There wasn't a huge threat looming over your hometown of Mystic Falls for the first time in a long time.

You didn't bother knocking when you arrived at the huge mansion. It felt like your second home since you spent so much time there.

"Hello?" You called out for anyone that was around.

Taking further steps inside, you saw Elena and Stefan sitting on the sofa in the living room.

"Hey, what are you two lovebirds doing?" You smiled at them. You had to admit that the two of them were pretty cute together. If only Damon looked at you with the same adoration that Stefan looked at Elena.

"We are going to go and catch a movie. We are just trying to decide which one to see." Stefan told you.

"Do you want to come?" Elena offered.

"No, thank you. I'm not in the mood to be a third wheel today."

"We understand," Stefan chuckled, "I think Damon is in the library."

"Thanks. I'll see you guys later." You waved at them before you made your way to the library.

Damon was standing near the huge fireplace when you walked into the room. He had a glass of his favourite bourbon in one hand. Classic Damon.

"I see you started day drinking without me."

He turned when he heard your voice and smiled a little, "You were taking too long."

"Well, I'm here now." You poured yourself some bourbon and walked towards him. "Are you doing your usual morning contemplation?"

"Actually, I'm continuing the contemplation that I started from last night. I haven't slept."

"What's going on in that head of yours that you haven't been able to sleep, Salvatore?"

He looked away from the fireplace. His eyes locked on yours, "You."

You were midway from taking another sip of bourbon and froze. "Me?"

"Yes, you. I've been thinking and beating myself up all night for not realizing how much of an idiot I am."

"What has that got to do with me?"

"Because I'm an idiot for not realizing sooner how much I love you."

"I love you too, Damon." You were confused. The two of you had told each other that tons of times. You didn't want to get your hopes up and think he meant it the other way.

Damon took a step closer to you after setting his now empty glass on a nearby table, "No, (Y/n). I don't mean the love that two friends share. I mean that I'm completely and without a doubt in love with you."

You could tell that Damon was serious. "You're in love with me?"

He cupped your face between his hands. One of his thumbs stroking your cheek softly, "I should've seen it before. I wish that I had known how I truly feel about you ages ago. It would've spared me countless times of agony. You are the one thing in my life that I'm sure of. You have been there for me through everything that life has thrown us. You are selfless and caring and everything that I need. My life had no meaning before I met you."

"Damon..." you breathed out. You had been waiting so long to hear words like that coming out of his mouth. It felt like you were in a dream that you didn't ever want to wake up from.

"Please say that you love me the same way as I love you." He chuckled.

"What about Elena?" You blurted out before you could stop yourself.

"What about her?"

"You were so in love with her not too long ago. I don't want to say how I feel about you without knowing that she doesn't have a hold on your heart still."

Damon held onto your gaze, "I don't love her. I did before but not nearly as much as I love you. I promise you that, (Y/n)."

That was all you needed to hear, "I'm in love with you too, Damon. I always have been."

Damon took another step forward and crashed his lips against yours. It was as passionate as you always expected it to be. The two of you moulded into one and you never wanted to let him go.
