It was a long summer evening when the nights were still warm from the hot summer's day. But later it would turn cool enough to stroll around the street in a light jacket. That was Emily's favorite time of year besides autumn when it was always cool and brisk. It was a time when she could think and wonder about what the next day would bring. Would it rain? Maybe. Would it be cloudy or clear? Who knows? The weatherman knows, but Emily didn't care about that. She liked to wonder about what would happen next...
Emily was a quiet girl who kept to herself unless she was with her friends. She only had four, but that's all she needed. All she needed to turn a bad day into a good one was Alex, Leah, Jade, and Carlos. They had all become friends in middle school and stayed together, even through the self-discovery and the awkward crushes and braces and greasy hair. They were all Juniors in high school now, and they could barely be separated. Always hand-in-hand. Always side-by-side. Never alone. Even if it's needed.
Emily was the last person to join the group, but she was ok with that. Leah and Jade had always been friends, but Alex and Carlos used to absolutely despise each other. They would pass each other in the halls and have to be pulled away from each other. Emily was always a loner, though. She never had too many friends, but she usually had at least one really close friend. She got made fun of a lot in grade school, mainly because she was really tall and had braces and glasses. She stood out like a sore thumb. But now she's in high school; she's pretty much shorter than everyone now, and she got contacts and her braces only lasted until 7th grade.
She was definitely built like an athlete, but she only found that out when her brother tried to recruit her for the lacrosse team. Her brother was about four years older and was perfect in the eyes of her parents. Perfect grades, perfect teeth, perfect eyes, perfect skin, perfect attitude, and even a perfect girlfriend. Her parents adored him. But Em was "wonky" as her dad called her. She had long legs and long arms and a short torso. Her hair was boring and brown and so were her eyes. Her skin had blemishes and freckles in all the wrong places, according to her parents.
"Why couldn't you have good skin like your brother? You came from the same parents and I know we didn't fail!" her mother would say. It really tore her up inside to see that her parents thought of her as imperfect. I mean, everyone is imperfect, but when it's called out, it can really take you back and make you think.
Now, I know you're probably wondering who I am why I decided to suddenly break the fourth wall? Well, I'll tell you, but not yet... You can't...
