WOCA: When and why did you start writing the winning book? What were your motivations?

WINNER: Well, this comic was originally a storyboard pitch to Nickelodeon in 2005 that went through a series of meetings and revisions. After all that they said "no thanks". A few years later I turned those formerly useless drawings into a comic and posted it on a webcomics site. A decade later I found Wattpad and posted here.

WOCA: What inspired you to create the characters? What about the plot?

WINNER: I was inspired in 1997 during a slow period working at an animation studio called Six Foot Two. I wanted a simple concept; a kid and a pet, but tried one I'd never seen before with the scorpion. They helped me make a short film that I animated. I made a second short at Wild Brain Animation for Cartoon Network.com in 2000 that developed the characters even more. Then the plot was developed through thinking of something dramatic and fun; a talent show. Then all those storyboard meetings.

WOCA: How did you get past the difficult moments, like the famous writer's block, short time or dislikes from other people?

WINNER The most difficult moment was being rejected after all the hard work. It took a long time to decide to go for it and make the 30 page comic. Keeping the art relatively simple helped with finishing it.

WOCA: Why did you enter the awards? Were you expecting to win the prize?

WINNER: I entered the awards (like many others) in order to share this story with as many as possible. It's an all-ages story that I think appeals to many, so I'm not shy about getting it out there. I never expect to win because it's so unusual in being a comic. Sometimes I wonder if it's fair to have all those cartoon pictures!

WOCA: What is your advice for the future writers?

WINNER: My advice for future writers is create a story you enjoy, with something that makes it unique. Then take your time revising it. Maybe even get a beta or proofreader. Completing it helps put everything in perspective as well, so that's a plus. Which means sometimes a smaller project can work out if an epic's too much.
