Chapter 6
After Luke and Alec left, I start to make dinner for Sage and Tyler. I pull out a bag of pasta because of pasta night. For each day of the week, we have a certain dinner. Mondays are always pasta night. Tuesdays are taco night, Wednesday is chili night, Thursday is rice, bean and chicken, Friday is pizza, Saturday is seafood and Sunday is roast beef. Everything is in a certain place and must stay in that place. Especially in the kitchen and the living room. If anything is out of place, there is a major freak-out. Suffice to say, it's fucking annoying!
"Kesi, when is bed time?" Ty asks. Let's just say he is very forgetful. "8 o'clock." I respond without hesitation. I have to know these things off by heart or I'm in trouble. Ty runs out of the kitchen just as I finish making the pasta. I pour a little bit of melted butter onto the pasta and grate some cheese onto it as well.
Placing the bowl down, I call out to my 9 year old siblings. Ty comes racing down crying. "Ty, what's wrong?" I ask in a panic. "Sage." he chokes out. In a split second, I sprint up the stairs and into Sage's bedroom. I thought she would have just fallen off her bed or something but no, she was on the ground, extremely pale and puking up blood. "Tyler, get into my car right now!" I yell at Tyler. He runs down to the garage and hopefully into my car. I place a hand on Sage's shoulder and she falls limp. My eyes widen and I gently pick up her limp body. When I get to my car, I find Tyler sitting in the back seat and I place Sage in the back laying with her head on Tyler's lap. "Kesi, what's going on? Is Sage okay? Where are we going?" Tyler asks in a rush. "Tyler, I don't know okay. We have to go to the hospital to make sure Sage in alright." I answer speeding down the street.
As we pull up to the hospital, Sage regains consciousness and pukes up more blood and I wince. Tyler opens his door and slides out letting me pick up Sage. I whisper words of comfort to the two of them as we walk into the all too familiar white waiting room. I rush to the desk and the reception lady points down a hallway after one glance of Sage. I turn down the hallway and a doctor with a stretcher runs up to us and takes Sage from me. The team of doctors that quickly assembled, whisks away Sage. An older lady comes up to us and takes us to a waiting room and tells us to sit. I sit down and Tyler crawls onto my lap and starts sobbing. "Hey, are you hungry?" I ask Tyler and he nods. I stand up and take his hand, leading him down to the cafeteria. He runs over to a table and I follow him after ordering some pasta and a coffee for me. "We should go back to the waiting room yeah?" I ask Tyler as I approach him. He stands up and follows me after grabbing his hand. I give him a reassuring squeeze and walk over to our empty seats. Tyler immediately grabs the food and starts to eat.
"Family of Sage Thompson." a plump nurse asks. Tyler and I stand right as Luke and Alec run into the room. Alec catches my eye and jogs over with Luke in tow. The four of us make our way down a few hallways and the nurse leads us into a room. On the bed, Sage is staring out of the window and turns to us as we enter. Her skin is sickly pale and her eyes look hollow. She tries to smile and we all rush over to her. Tyler jumps onto the bed and hugs her tight. She wraps her arms around Tyler and I sit down by her feet. Luke and Alec sit on the two chairs by the bedside. A man with grey hair comes into the room and smiles sadly at us. "Hello, I am Dr. Kelley. I'm going to wait until your parents come to share the news." he introduces his self. At the last sentience, all five of us stiffen. Dr. Kelley notices. "Our parents will not come to the hospital tonight. Nor will they come ever." I hiss at the doctor. "Very well, I truly am sorry to share this but, Sage here has leukemia." he informs us clearing upset. Tyler bursts into new tears as do Luke, Alec and Sage. Me, well that's a different story. I jump out of my seat and pin the doctor to the wall. "What do you mean she has leukemia?! There must be an error in your tests!" I yell. Dr. Kelley justs shakes his head. "Ma'am, there were no errors in our tests. We could try chemo but, it's too far along, it would do nothing." he explains. At that I fall to the ground and start balling.
We are all sobbing for at least two hours. Our sobs just make each other sob and it keeps going on like that for the long period of time. Alec stops crying first and hugs Sage. Luke, Tyler and I soon follow suit until we are all a pile of bodies and limbs. A nurse comes in to tell us visiting hours ended. Alec, Luke, Tyler and I all stand up and slowly walk out of the hospital. Alec leans over to me. "Forget about the pier tonight." he whispers. I nod and take Tyler's hand and walk to my car.
The drive home was full of Tyler's sniffs and sobs. When we arrive home, Tyler goes straight to bed and I sit down on the couch. This whole series of events is way too familiar. My family is extremely messed up.
"Mommy, what's going on? Why are we here in the hospital?" I ask. "Because you are going to get your new brother and sister!" mommy squeaks. "Cassandra, let's go outside for a bit." my daddy offers. I walk out the door with my hand in daddy's big one.
After playing tag outside for forever, I sit down on the grass and start yawning. Daddy walks over to me and picks me up. "Let's go see mommy!" he says. I nod and we walk into the hospital. We go into mommy's room and she's holding two little babies. I squeal and run over to mommy. "Hi Casandra, meet Sage and Tyler. Your little brother and sister!" mommy says proudly.

After 3 weeks of Sage and Tyler being home, mommy still hasn't came home. "Daddy, where's mommy?" I ask daddy. "Sweetie, mommy is very sick and will not come home. She will go to Heaven at the end of the week." Daddy confesses. I blink and start crying non-stop.
"What about Sage and Tyler? What will they do without a mommy? What will I do without mommy?" I ask. Daddy just hugs me closer than before. We sit like that, me sobbing loudly and him sobbing silently, for a long time. I eventually fall asleep sobbing onto my dadddy's shoulder.
