The Anthem

You are freedom
your veins deeply rooted by
yesterday's sorrow
and tomorrow's regret
and when you cut
you bleed of the bliss of the present

You are freedom
the world is a cage and only
you possess the keys
to open its bridges
and close its scars
-- keep it, it's yours

You are freedom
the souls marching in your
presence, singing the hymn
of your absence,
and dying --
with your name held high

You are freedom
in all your beauty
there is solace
there is power in your every inch,
the hunger swelling deep within
-- they can't take it, it's yours

You are freedom
in a million years
you found yourself
and you will do it again and
again 'til you find every bit
smeared with their thumbprints

You are freedom
the slashes they throw
are nothing compared
to the demons you fought
inside you
-- they can't tame it, it's yours

You are freedom
they envy your entirety
for they cannot understand how
you stand with crushed feet,
speak with crushed throat,
and smile like it's nothing

You are freedom
and it's a shame the books
will never tell how you took back
your body from everyone
who conquered it
-- it's not theirs, it's yours

You are freedom
and your voice will be heard
for it's the voice the universe
is afraid of,
it's the voice of the stars and the
galaxies all shouting at once:

You are freedom
You are freedom
You are freedom
-- So why don't you set yourself free?
