Someone coughed behind me and I put on a blank face and slowly turned around. George and another muscular bloke were standing right behind me.
“Ah hello, I wasn’t stalking you I was just making a study of your group,” I explained. I closed my eyes when I finished my sentence. Bloody hell, why did I just say that? I had the urge to slap myself but I knew that would just make me look like a psycho so I refrained from doing so while they were here.
“That made it sound a lot worse than it actually is,” I added. George and the other guy stared at each other and I could see some sort of exchange pass through them.
“So how can I help you today?” I interrupted, smiling too widely, trying to break the awkwardness. They blinked and turned their gazes back to me.
“Well er I’m Alp-sorry um Brendon and George here had a question for you,” Brendon coughed, pushing George forward. He scowled and muttered something under his breath. I was about to ask him to repeat it louder but Brendon elbowed him in the ribs and he spoke up again.
“I was just wandering if you would mind coming out to coffee with me and a couple of mates,” he mumbled a scowl still evident on his face. I had to duck my head to hide my laughter, oh god, what’s making him do this. His hair was all fuzzy at the side and I knew that he would have had his hands in their in frustration. I was trying to figure out if this was a joke or if he was being peer pressured into this, either way I knew he didn’t want to be here by himself.
“Um no?” I answered though it sounded more like a question. George slumped and to anyone it may have looked as though he was disappointed but I could see the relief on his face. Someone’s foot connected with the back of my leg and my mouth dropped open in pain and I grunted and tried to kick back at the foot.
“Well that’s great, so I’ll probably not see you later,” he said brightly and he spun around and started to walk back to his ‘pack’ table. Brendon stared at me and gave an apologetic smile and then hurried after George. I didn’t bother to watch their whispered conversation so I simply turned around to everyone’s shocked faces. Alicia slapped my arm and I jumped in surprise.
“What was that for? I bet you’re the one who kicked me too” I cried, leaning away from her.
“Are you kidding? He was totally asking you out,” Alicia sighed and her face looked so hopeful and romantic that I felt like laughing.
“I don’t even know him. I don’t know how you guys do it in America but in country Australia, you don’t just say yes to everything, you never know who’s going to turn out to be a serial killer,” I explained.
“Oh come on, how many people actually turn out to be serial killers,” Angus nudged my ribs and I pulled away from him too.
“Lots of people,” I snapped defensively but all I got was everyone mussing my hair.

I moaned as I collapsed in a booth next to Collin. The little coffee shop we were in was small and tucked away in the corner of the main street. The window was dusty and so the room had a strange story quality to it.
“School wasn’t that bad,” Collin sighed exasperated and I made a face at him.
“When you still have Jet lag it still is. I miss sleeping so much,” I cried, wiping away fake tears. Collin muttered something about going up to the counter to order something but I quickly put my head on my arms and closed my eyes.
I went into a state of drifting between sleep and awareness and was vaguely aware of someone approaching.
“Hey Collin why are you so different at school?” I mumbled, turning my head to look at him. I was face to torso with someone that was definitely not Collin. I could see the defined body underneath the polo shirt.
“You’re not Collin,” I glanced up at the guys face and saw George, “But none other than my favourite stalker,” I chuckled sleepily. I raised myself up onto my elbows and watched as George stiffly sat down.
He wasn’t saying anything and he ran a hand through his hair sighing. I stared at him expectantly and he took a deep breathe.
“Idenounceyouasmymate,” he proclaimed, speaking so fast that I didn’t understand a word he said.
“Brilliant, well if I understand that I’ll let you know in the near future,” I replied sarcastically, putting my head back down on the table, closing my eyes. I felt him get up and leave and he was quickly replaced with Collin.
“Why are you hanging around George?” Collin asked, slipping a coffee into my hands.
“We keep on bumping into each other; otherwise we wouldn’t really be speaking. He seems a bit like a douche to me,” I explained, gulping down the scalding hot coffee.
