While gathering the 'cat', Cato had gone to see Diana.
Unknowing of Naseem, who had planned to sabotage Cato's task, and get him thrown in the dungeons. Naseem had planned to divert Cato's attention, while disposing of the 'cat'.
Instead Naseem had discovered of Cato's relationship with a mortal, and he had immediately reported to the king.
After Cato returned with the 'cat', King Alistair confronted him. Cato did not deny the accusation, though the King had expected him to.
King Alistair had sentenced him to life stripped of his immortality; while Naseem blackmailed a gaurd or two to try and end Cato's life on his way to the mortal world.
So now the exiled Cato, the mortal Cato, while escaping the guards, raced down the 'rainbow' bridge. To find, worriedly waiting for him, Diana.
