"Well, it's about damn time!" Carmen snapped.
"Hey, these things can't just be made at the snap of a finger!" I snapped back as I placed the pancakes on the table. "They take time and effort!"
"Ooo, you put in so much effort to mix powder and water!"
"Hey, be happy you got them when you did! I could've just not given them to you at all!"
"Good morning to me," Macey mumbled as she walked into the kitchen and towards the coffee pot.
"How did you sleep?" I asked my sister.
"Pretty well, actually. Turns out the couch isn't as solid as I remembered."
"Well, that's good to hear."
As I said that, I glared at my cousin, who just flipped me off in response.
"Anyway," Macey continued, "you better have some energy in you, Mike; we've got some more investigating to do."
"Heh. 'Investigating'," Carmen said quietly. "Didn't know you two were detectives now."
"It's more important than whatever it is you do all day," I retorted.
Macey closed her eyes and sighed as she rubbed her temples.
"One minute... That's all I ask. One minute of no bickering..."
Carmen and I looked at Macey and then at each other. The room was silent for a few seconds before Macey sat in her chair and grabbed some pancakes.
"So, we need to look into this Officer Jack White some more," Macey told me as she poured the syrup. "It might not be a big deal, but I swear I've heard that name in the news."
"White..." Carmen echoed as she paused mid-bite. "That sounds familiar."
"Good, I'm glad it's not just me," Macey replied.
"Hang on...!" Carmen gasped as I the mental light bulb went off. "Let's see if I can find it..."
She then took out her phone and started typing and scrolling like a madman. As tempted as I was to ask if White was a name in her little black book, I held my tongue; she may actually have some helpful information for once.
"I thought so!" she said a minute later as she pointed her phone at Macey.
Macey took the phone and looked at the screen.
"'Child Fatally Strangled in Home by Mother'," she read aloud.
Her eyes then widened a few seconds seconds later.
"'The victim's mother, Alice White, was nowhere on the property and is currently the prime suspect in the murder.'"
"That's it!!" she exclaimed as she slapped the table in a eureka moment. "That's where I heard that name! I read an article similar to this, and one of the people interviewed was an Officer Jack White, the victim's uncle!"
"Was he part of the investigation?" I asked.
"I think it said that his boss told him to step aside, since this was too personal of a case."
"Yeah, no shit," Carmen commented before taking a bite of her food.
"Okay, so this is great and all," I said, "but how does this tell us what Officer White is up to, if he even is up to anything?"
"Well, on its own, nothing," my sister replied, "but it's a start."
She gave Carmen her phone back and cut up her pancakes.
"After we're done eating, we're going to look into this strangling a bit more to see if we can find something of value," she continued. "Call me paranoid, but this is all a little too suspicious for me to write it off as coincidence."
"If you insist," I replied as I ate my food.
The rest of the meal was spent in silence, sans the sounds of our utensils and chewing. I think Macey's right when she says she's a little paranoid, but if it means we can get to the bottom of what's going on and save Jamie, then I'll play along.
