Prologue

"He's such a freak, how come he's always alone?"

"No one even likes him, what a loser."

"Why does he always wear that beanie? He never even takes it off for a second."

"He's always so abnormally happy, I'll bet you ten bucks he's a psycho killer or something."

"He acts like such a little kid, no wonder everyone hates him."

"Don't get too close, I bet you'll catch some kind of disease."

All the comments and searing insults Luke heard as he walked down the hallways hurt, hurt so bad. He'd never show it of course, but it made his chest tight and heart ache. Why didn't anyone like him? Why was everyone so fast to pass judgment, when they didn't even know him? They didn't know the reason he always wore his beanie was to hide his ears, his fuzzy, sensitive puppy ears. They didn't know that he also had a tail that he had to tuck away everyday so it wouldn't pop out and wag when he was happy. They didn't know. Yet they would make fun of him, and isolate him even when he would try to make a friendly conversation or friend. God, all Luke wanted was a friend. He'd yearned for one since day one.. Someone to scratch behind his ears just the way he liked, and cuddle him. Someone he could tell his secrets to and laugh with, someone who just accepted him.

His "parents" who had found and taken him in, back when he was around 14 human years taught him everything he knows. How to talk, how to act like a full, normal person, and the knowledge he knows. Luke was always very smart, and that's why he picked up on human lifestyle so easily, and was now living on his own, attending college classes. He didn't know where the two Hemmings' were now but he missed them a whole lot, he'd grown terribly attatched to them after the day when they found him curled up under a bush, wet, whimpering, and abandoned. They hadn't even been freaked out, Mr.Hemmings had known of hybrids like Luke, and wanted to give the small blond dog-boy a chance at a human life. So, that's how "Luke Hemmings" began.

Luke often wishes he wasn't part canine, it ruined everything. His peers found him childish and stupid, just because his dog instincts made him giddy and often a tad too excited in certain situations. They also always called him out for wearing his beanies constantly, and would laugh mockingly. "He must be bald, and ashamed because he's ugly," They'd sneer and shove him into a wall, rolling their eyes at his pathetic little whines of fear. Luke wishes he was fully human so he could get a friend, or even maybe a boyfriend. He'd kissed another male once at a birthday party, and had had tons of crushes on cute guys, but had yet to actually get an actual relationship.

Luke wishes he was fully human so he could muster up the guts to talk to the attractive boy with light brown, curly hair, and bright, honey colored eyes who also sat in the library for lunch hour. But he couldn't, because he was still half dog, and that boy would hate him just like everyone else.
