They held each other at point blank, their eyes matched from across the room. The air was still, and anyone else around would think all was right in the world, but not for these two women. They stayed put with their guns raised.
"Drop yours first, I'll surrender... We can talk." The shorter one offered, her gaze unwavering.
"You think I'll fall for that?" Her counterpart hissed through her teeth. "I've seen you pull that same move countless times before, it didn't end well."
"Well, I mean come on... They're dead, of course it didn't..." She sighed, cutting herself off. "That's not the point! Will you just trust me?"
"I said no."
It was then that the shorter one knew it was solidified. Whatever it was that they had before, or that she thought they had, was gone. "Why did you turn into this?"
"I had no choice!" That caused a break in her. Now the emotions could be seen painted on her face, with the contorting of her features and quivering of her bottom lip. "You did this!"
"Valeriya..."
"You're here alone for once?" Valeriya asked, ice in her voice.
"Just this once." Toni clasped her hands behind her back and began to pace the room. "I need to talk to you."
A sculpted eyebrow rose, and soon her eyes followed along a path that lead to Toni's pacing form. "What could you possibly need to talk to me about? There is nothing to talk about. You and I aren't friends. We're not..." She paused for a moment. "Lovers, either."
"That as it may," Toni stopped pacing and faced Valeriya, staring at her hardened expression. "Just tell me if you're okay."
The silence that followed was deafening. Valeriya's stoney exterior began to crack and break away, but only a little. Only enough for Toni to notice. "Am I okay?" Her voice quivered.
"Even separated, I still worry for you." She shrugged. "You'll always be my woman."
"Of course I'm not okay!" Valeriya shot up from her seat, leaning over her desk and bracing herself with both hands on it's surface. "I haven't been okay since... Since you. You work for my rival, Antonia. You left me for them, and I cannot figure out for the life of me why. Why?! I love you so much, with all of my being, and you..."
"It was the only way to keep you safe."
Her blue eyes shot up, horror and shock reading all over them. "What?"
"I don't need protection! That's the last god damn thing I need! And from you? Antonia, you taught me everything I know!" Valeriya roared, stepping out from behind her desk and towards Toni.
Toni took a step back and held up her hands in surrender. "I admire your confidence, but there are people stronger than me. These are those people, Val. Thats why I... Thats why I did this."
She stood a few feet away from Toni, considering what she said. Her hands found her black hair and began smoothing it back, trying to calm herself down. "Why didn't you just tell me..."
"Because I know you." Toni stepped forward, closing the gap between them. She reached up and placed a gentle hand on Valeriya's forearm. "You would have tried to take on an army, but this is a war neither of us can win on our own."
"So, you're there to what? Divert them?" Valeriya blurted in annoyance.
"No, to dismantle them."
