The next day in class Lydia avoided making eye contact with me at all. "Lydia, could you please read the rest for us?" Mrs. Payne asked. She jumped up like she'd been shot before shaking her head no. "Are you okay?" I asked. She shakes her head yes. I ask her if she wanted to sit with us at lunch but she quickly refuses saying she has things to do. "She hasn't said a word since she's been here," Tilly rudely says. "She's just shy," I say, trying to defend her. Tilly rolls her eyes. "I have to go to the bathroom," I say. I left the table to go look for Lydia. I quickly walk down the hall going in the library and past the bathrooms hoping to find Lydia, but I don't. So I head outside to the track to see if she's there. I see her long brown hair swaying back and forth as she runs around the track.
"Lydia!" I shout. She stops startled and starts making her way towards me. "Are you okay?" I ask her. "I'm fine," she says, gasping. She runs her fingers through her brown hair that now looks a bit messy. "You don't look too good, come sit and have some water," I said. She looks at me for a minute before shaking her head and softly saying "I can't." Before I can get another word out she starts running again.
I get home but I constantly think about Lydia. She's so thin, she must exercise a lot. I never thought about it until now, but Lydia's really pretty. Tilly's pretty too, but there's just something different about Lydia. I just hate how Lydia doesn't talk and how she doesn't open up to people. I stop myself suddenly because I'm probably being insensitive. I mean she's new and doesn't have many friends, so that's understandable.
