I get home and think about Lydia and why there was blood on the floor. The words self harm came into my mind but I quickly pushed them aside. I couldn't imagine Lydia hurting herself like that. I see Lydia in class the next day and she's wearing a long sleeve shirt. "It's a little hot to be wearing that don't you think?" I ask. "I don't think so," She replied. She walks to her seat. "Who wears a long sleeve shirt in August?" Rob asks me. "It's not that hot," I say, trying to get him to drop the subject. I look over at Lydia and she doesn't have her usual distant look on her face, she looks interested in something for once.
Our teacher calls her name and she jumps and whatever she was interested in dropped to the floor. She struggles for a minute but eventually she reads the poem she was instructed to. When she's done she grabs the book she was looking at. It read What are you eating? in capital letters. It was a calorie book. What does Lydia need with a calorie book? She's already so small. I feel like if I touch her she could just break in two. She quickly throws the book into her book bag when she notices me looking at it. She lifts her arm up to put it back in the place it was. As she did that, her sleeve came up and I saw something that answered my question from yesterday.
The bell rings and she starts to head out the door. I grab her arm and try to find the courage to ask her a question. She just stares at me. "Lydia," I say, "I saw something yesterday and I wanted to ask you about it, but it seems like it's personal and I don't want you to get upset." "It's okay, just ask me," She says. "I saw blood on the floor yesterday and, well, I was wondering-" I got cut off. "Uh, I have to go," Lydia says, pacing to the door. Should I get into this with her?
