shawn stared at the blonde girl pacing in front of him. they were in the cafeteria, and crystal seemed pissed as hell. who was shawn kidding? of course crystal was frustrated. not only was her family's death anniversary coming up, she was anxious about the 3:30 meeting cory was going to have with mr feeny.
" seriously, shawn? you made cory take the blame for something he didn't even do just because you refuse to get in trouble?" crystal fumed, her hands flying everywhere. her beloved cousins were nowhere to be seen - eric was too busy being an idiot and chasing over some girl named desiree, and cory was probably already making his way to mr feeny's office right now since it was 3:28 - and neither was topanga. all she could do now was reprimand the hunter boy who sat nervously, tapping his foot. no, she didn't want shawn to be shipped off to military school. but, she also didn't want cory to get in trouble.
the selfishness shawn was portraying was understandable, though. his father was already beyond pissed after he blew up a mailbox, and if he were to get a call from mr feeny himself about the newspaper accident, crystal was sure shawn's father would do more than just scold him. however, as much as crystal wanted to help shawn escape from the wrath of both the new principal and his father, she knew that what shawn was doing then was wrong. and she had to make him realise his mistakes. that's what friends are for, right?
however, without thinking through about her actions, her legs rushed off towards mr feeny's office. perhaps, she could help ease the punishment mr feeny would throw cory's way with her sweet talking. other than that, he was their neighbour. he couldn't just suspend her cousin after years of getting to know the whole family, right? crystal didn't waste much time. as soon as she reached the principal's office, she threw open the door, ignoring the desperate calls of the woman at the front desk.
"ahhh, ms rhodes. your cousin here was just telling me about how he would rather protect a friendship than walk out of this office punishment free," mr feeny explained, clapping his hands together. if he was shocked from crystal bursting in his office, he didn't show it. instead, he stared at crystal, waiting for a response.
but, crystal stood still, her right hand still clasping the door knob. the words that came out of mr feeny's mouth surprised her. even though she knew of the amount of loyalty and love both shawn and cory had for each other, - she'd watched them go through each and every problem they faced together without fail during the summer break, for gods sake - part of her didn't think that cory would stand strong despite having the threat of a suspension hanging above him. it somehow stirred many emotions inside of the young girl. she was proud and in awe... astonished at cory's stupidity ; but admiration was all she felt for her cousin. it took everything in her to stop herself from running up to the boy sitting in front of the desk and wrapping her arms around him. cory truly was an epitome of a great friend.
"look, mr feeny, he just wanted to do something that would make him somebody special," cory sighed. crystal's grip on the door knob tightened, before her hand fell limply. kicking the door close, she made her way to the chair right next to cory.
"ah. to be somebody special is a quality from within, mr matthews. to give you an example, i think it's a very rare quality for you to put a friend's welfare before your own."
"but... just a second ago, you wanted me to rat on him."
crystal beamed. it was nice to know that even though cory had done something that crystal would have praised him for years, he was still the same dumbass.
"as the new principal, yes. but as your teacher, as someone who lived next door and watched you grow up, i never expected it for a moment."
crystal didn't think it was possible, but her smile only grew wider. maybe things would turn out better than she thought it would.

despite the good things that happened that day, in which cory managed to lower the blow of his punishment and shawn realised his mistakes, crystal couldn't help herself as she sighed. with her blonde hair spread out on her bed and her fingers fiddling with her shirt, she couldn't help but think of her deceased family members. although it had already been a long time since the disaster happened, crystal still couldn't move on from it.
can you blame the young girl? she lost her whole family at such a young age.
as the days to the death anniversary grew closer, crystal found herself vividly dreaming of the car crash every night. each and every time that she closed her eyes, there would never be a time where she didn't wake up crying and gasping for air. the memories of that day made her livid. it was still fresh in her mind, and it felt like it was only yesterday that it occurred. the way the car rolled multiple times before stopping, the way her older sister had flown out of the car despite wearing her seatbelt, the way her older brother had thrown her whole body in front of her to protect her, the way her father had screamed "hold on" and the way her mother had looked back at her with eyes filled with fear and mouthed "i love you honey... it's okay". it was way too real. everything felt like such a blur, yet crystal felt it. felt in on her body as the shattered glass flew and attacked her skin, felt it in her bones as some of them cracked under the pressure of the fall, felt it in her heart as she watched her family die.
she was the only one who survived... and yet, she wished that she didn't because she'd rather die than be left alone in this sad sad world without the people who raised her.
exhausted by her own thoughts, crystal drifted off to sleep even though she knew that she would only be met with the images of her family bleeding, of the ambulance coming into view, of cory and eric matthews hugging her tightly from both her sides as they drove away from her hometown, of shawn hunter placing a hand on her cheek and whispering "i'll protect you."
maybe, just maybe, shawn hunter and the matthews would be able to piece her broken heart together and make her feel whole again. shawn would protect her... right?
