The Day of the Crash
i answered my phone seeing that luke was calling.
"hello?" i said, though there was really no point. i already knew it was him.
"do ya wanna come with the boys and i to a movie tonight?" he asked.
"yeah!" i answered, physically nodding my head, though he couldn't see.
"ok we'll pick you up at seven." luke said.
"cool." i responded, unsure of what else to say.
then i hung up. now admittedly i have a major crush on luke, i mean he's perfect and i know him really well. we've been friends forever, for as long as i could remember. our mums had been best friends when we were little kids. luke was a couple months older than me, so he took the role of the older brother that i never really got to have.
(six hours later)
i threw on my black skinny jeans and flannel with my hair tied up in a bun. just then the doorbell rang. i walked downstairs to answer it.
"hey oli." calum said. my name is olivia, but the guys call me oli. i have no idea where 'oli' came from, but that was my nickname now.
"hi, you guys ready to go?" i asked the four of them, looking up at each of them expectantly. though they were only a few years older than me, they towered over me, and made it seem as though i was five years old.
"yup" luke responded, before turning his head to ashton. "by the way, we all decided that mister twenty-year-old is driving."
"shotgun!" i declared, sniggering at the other three, that were left to squish together in the backseat. after that, we left the house and got into the car, while ashton got into the drivers seat and me into the passenger seat. i turned around after fastening the seatbelt, laughing at calum, luke, and michael that were all sitting in the back seat, luke in the middle, his lanky legs desperately trying to find empty space to stretch out.
we drove to the movie theatre listening to all time low the whole time. we finally arrived and decided on seeing maleficent. we finished our popcorn before the movie even started, so we ended up going two hours with no food, causing the four of them to complain that there was absolutely no food, and that they were gonna starve to death.
"this is boring." luke whispered to me, looking around the theatre that had a couple other people sitting down.
"what's wrong with boring?" i asked him, smirking.
when the movie was over, we went back to the car. we were singing along at the top of our lungs to 'backseat serenade' when there was a sudden flash of light, an extremely loud bang, and lots of rolling over, feeling as though we were on a rollercoaster that wasn't planning on stopping anytime soon. we came to a stop, miraculously landing right-side up. looking around, my vision blurred, i could tell that the car was completely totaled. all of the windows and the front and back windshield were shattered, and there was glass everywhere.
surprisingly, i felt no pain. it was probably shock or adrenaline, or maybe even both, but i felt calm. my eyes met ashton's limp body, his clothes tattered, and blood running down the side of his face, slumped over the steering wheel. i had no more strength to look and see if any of the other guys were okay. only then did i notice luke, who was wedged in-between ashton and i, his head and shoulders laying on the hood of the car. i knew that we were all probably gonna die.
everything after that was a blur.
all i remember was ashton slamming the brakes while he slammed against the steering wheel, luke crashing through the front window and me blacking out.
i woke up later in the hospital. i seemed to be fine. but then i remembered. the singing, the lights, the bang, the rolling, the dying.
"WHERE ARE THEY?" i yelled, sitting up in the bed i was laying in, inside of a plain room with a dark blue curtain drawn around the bed.
there were no doctors in the room so i ripped out my tubes and ran out into the hallway. i tried to ignore the pain in my leg. i found myself limping, frantically searching around for someone, anyone.
all of the sudden a doctor rounded the corner and i froze, staring him directly in the eye.
"where are they?" i asked, hoping that at least one of them would be alright. hoping that he knew who i was talking about.
"they? they're gone." he spoke, no sympathy whatsoever in his voice.
i collapsed on the ground and cried, while nurses rushed to my aid, taking me gently by the arms and carrying me back to the bed.
later, the doctors told me all of them had died in the crash and a passerby called 911. I had escaped with a small leg injury. the person who caused the accident was drunk. it was all his fault. he killed my friends. they're never coming back. i let tears stream down my face.
"your mum is waiting outside." the doctor said.
"thank you," i said, and got up to leave.
on the way home, all i did was sob. my mum made no attempt to stop me, or console me, she just let me cry. for some reason, i was thankful for her silence. my best friends were gone forever. what was i supposed to do?
"it's going to be okay, hun." she said, breaking her silence.
"thanks," i said, not meaning it.
i wish it would have been okay. if it was okay, they would still be alive
