As soon as my knocks rattled the door to my room, Gauri scurried to open it.
"Nobody aapko fallow Kiya, na?"
I rolled my eyes at her childishness and mischievous, huge orbs.
"The coast is clear, Gauri. Stop making yourself seem so suspicious," (and foolish) I said pushing her back inside with the rim of the silver dinner plate on her chest.
"Aah, accha. Okay, saari!"
I handed the plate filled with daal, chaawal, roti, sabzi, dahi and mirchiii (as she had exclaimed in that respective order) and promptly locked ourselves inside, with the still unconscious Ishana.
I resumed my position by the hands of the calm girl, on the squeaky chair, again, as the chattering one entertained herself with quirky conversations (with herself, of course); majorly covering the heritage and history of each dish.
I wonder if God had ordered special products online to create a piece like Gauri. Manufacturing defects included.
She could never fucking shut up!
I tried with all of my might to ignore her and to just concentrate on showering the serene angel in my hands with my, albeit unheard, deepest apologies and remorse.
But a man can hold back only for so long! I've never, ever come across an infuriating specimen as Gauri and I have Rudra for a brother, so believe me! So, I snapped.
I threw a pillow at her, for the lack of better words.
Caught her right in the head! She stared at me with shock and confusion swimming in those big brown pupils for straight twenty minutes.
And that was the most peaceful and satisfactory twenty minutes to ever grace this planet.
Didn't last too long, obviously. All good things must come to an end, as some asshole said.
"Psst...psst... Omkaraji!"
Whaaaaaaaaaaattttttt?
"What?"
"Sab theek hai, na? Top floor mein!? You just threw a pillow at me," she complained at the cue of my curt reply, her voice taking a sharp tone.
"I know," I smirked. She just groaned, promptly mincing her bad-mouthing.
Her button nose turned to the deepest hues of pink. A beautiful shade that deserves to be preserved in the finest bottle.
I watched her as she shuffled around the room, doing the most random things, from fixing Ishana's pillows to arranging my hair products in ascending order. All whilst blushing violently, almost as if she dipped her face in one of those red paints she held now. Her skin glowed on its own with the best tint I've ever had the pleasure to witness.
"Stop watching me, Omkara ji," she whispered, her words almost disappearing in between the folds of the thick air of the room due to the unexplained tension predominant between us.
I flinched away, cursing myself for being lost in the likes of a person like her.
I held on tighter to the petite fingers in my hand, "You think too much of yourself, Gauri. Don't forget that, to me, you're a nobody."
Her hands froze over the pillows before resuming to pamper the silent occupant of the bed.
I, yet again watched her; part anticipating her reaction to my words and the other being mesmerized as ever. I know my words affected her. They always do.
I watched as she spread a blankets onto the floor, by the bed, duping another herself.
I watched as she put down a couple of pillows over it.
I watched as she set water on the table and the floor.
I watched as she drifted around the room, turning off all the lights, except the tiny flicker of the small night shade on the bedside table.
I watched as she gracefully plopped herself down onto the comforts of her makeshift bed, in the dark.
I watched as she made room for another, turning herself away from me.
I couldn't take my eyes off her as she whispered into the darkness, "Don't forget that, to me, you're my pati, Omkara ji."
