Walking up the porch steps to my grandmother’s cabin, I couldn’t help but remember her sitting in her rocking chair as she waited for me.
I smiled and felt tears at my eyes.
The cabin looked pretty typical. It was small—my grandmother used to tell me stories of how her and her two-now deceased- siblings would run around the cabin until they were dizzy.
I stepped into the homey place and took off my coat and boots. Dropping my bag on the floor, I walked forward until I found the lights.
It had not been a good day. It started with the supplies guy, then my…mate, then the heated discussion with the rogue leaders, oh and my mate.
The cabin was small, as I’ve mentioned. A loveseat and an armchair with a small coffee table made up the front of the cabin. Colorful and patterned wool couch cushions, blankets, drapes, and even a rug decorated the space. Beyond that a sideway staircase leading to the loft divided the kitchen area on the left while the dining table could be seen from the front. A small room in the back held a washing machine, old boxes and wood for the fireplace. The back also had a small bathroom.
I could walk from the front of the cabin to the back door in less than eight steps.
Knowing the layout of the cabin even in the dark, I made my way to the kitchen before I turned on the kitchen light.
Turning on the tap, I couldn’t help but think of my grandmother. Talking about her today had made me miss her.
I washed my hands and was about to splash some water on my face when the sound of something falling startled me.
I turned around and my heart pounded in my chest. He was sitting casually on one of the four kitchen chairs, his hand outstretched as if to catch something. I glanced and he’d dropped a pen.
As our eyes connected I let out a piercing scream.
“AAAAHHHH!”
The guy in front of me stood up and rushed to me, trying to get me to quiet down.
“Sh, it’s okay. It’s me.” His hands moved closer to me, with the intention of placing them on my shoulders.
I backed up into the sink and I could hear the water still running. “Don’t touch me! Get away!”
Those wonderful eyes of his examined me before they closed. The guy backed up a couple steps and held up his hands in front of him. When he opened his eyes again I diverted mine. I didn’t want to lose myself in those eyes.
“What are you doing here?” The words came flying out of my mouth.
“You’re my mate,” he replied simply, as if the answer should have been obvious. His voice was soft, welcoming…
I could feel the thick tension between us now that the words were out. I looked over him. He wore a blue plaid shirt and dark jeans—he’d changed. I could smell traces of cologne on him, which had probably worn out throughout the day.
“How’d you find me?” I asked in a high squeak. I tried to clear my throat.
He reached behind him and grabbed something from the kitchen table. Once he opened his hand I saw my phone. I’d completely forgotten I’d abandoned it with him.
