After I completed the language lessons, Otto started speaking in English. Earthling dialect was in a very low, soothing frequency compared to what I was used to. Sixamian languages were very high in frequency. In fact I doubted Earthlings would even be able to hear us speak in our mother tongue.
I was taking a quick nap when Otto woke me up.
"Intern, I'm afraid there's something wrong with part of my system." she said.
"What part?" I replied, rubbing the sleep out of my eyes and sitting up. I made my way to the window and didn't hear what Otto was saying, because right there in front of me was the beautiful planet I'd seen on the Planet Tracker. My breath caught in my throat as I gazed at it. It was vibrant and beautiful, like no other planet I'd seen.
I stared at it in awe. I was actually going there.
"Otto," I said, trying to find the right English words to use. "Earth is so... sexy."
"That is not the proper usage of that word." Otto replied.
"How far away?" I asked, ignoring her in favor of my excitement.
"We should be landing in no less than five minutes. Though, I cannot promise the landing will be smooth."
"Why not?"
"As I said, the landing stabilizers have been compromised."
"Compromised? What is living in the landing stabilizers?"
"The word you are thinking of is colonized. Compromised means that standards are lower than desirable."
My heart skipped a beat and I realized I really should've been paying attention instead of gawking at the planet.
"How do I fix it?" I asked nervously.
"I am working on it, but I will not be done in time. There is a high chance of crash landing."
"Otto, what if I die?"
"Now entering Earth's gravity. Landing in two minutes."
"Otto, what do I do?!"
"Crash landing protocol is to perform an emergency exit while the ship is still airborne. There is a parachute beside the door."
My English was flimsy but I understood enough to know what to do. I climbed down the ladder, resisting the urge to look back in the little cockpit that I'd grown attached to. I grabbed the parachute from beside the door.
I took a deep breath. Part of the training for SET required practice in skydiving, but the classes were brief because our ships rarely had issues landing. I guessed mine was the exception. I never really thought I'd have to use that training.
Before I could think myself out of it I threw open the hatch and jumped out of the rocket. I took a second to survey my surroundings. The beautiful light blue sky was completely clear of clouds so I could see to the ground below. There were numerous tall buildings, taller than I'd ever seen before, and in the middle of these buildings was what I could assume was a park. It looked like I was going to land in the park.
As I neared the surface, I noticed a lake with a bride going across it. If I could calculate everything correctly, I could land on that bridge. I hastily pulled the string on my parachute and I heard it unfurl behind me. I looked down and focused on my target, trying my best to ignore the Earthlings shading their eyes and pointing at me. My first task was to survive; I could worry about them later.
I landed on the bridge with a thud and took off my parachute. I breathed a heavy sigh of relief before finally looking around to take in my surroundings.
Almost immediately, though, I heard shouting.
"What's that falling from the sky?!" someone yelled.
I turned around just in time to see my ship crash into the water.
For a minute all I could do was stare exasperated at it. It was smoking in quite a few spots and the water was rippling around it. Some of the passersby who were too close had gotten drenched in water.
"Clear the area! It's gonna blow!" a voice screamed.
I knew for a fact that the ship was not going to explode- Sixam ships were designed to be incredibly hardy. Nevertheless, I followed the crowd with the hopes of blending in and going unnoticed. Maybe if I ran away, everyone would forget that I'd fallen from the sky just like my ship.
People cleared the area and I was shoved off the bridge, but I noticed that the crowd was very concentrated. As soon as I saw an opening I bolted away from the crowd and tried to head towards a building, figuring I could hide inside one of them.
Thus would begin my new life on Earth.
