''Valerie!'' a small chuckle escaped my red lips as Michael's tousled head appeared in the hallway. I leaned back in the chair I was sitting in by the cash register, trying my hardest to hold in the laughter that was bubbling inside of me.
The smell of popcorn spread in my lungs as I inhaled the warm air inside of the small booth. It was my second week as a new employee on my extra job as a worker at the local cinema. I threw my head backwards and re-tied my bleached violet hair in a high pony tail and adjusted the small name label that was pinned on the left side of my chest.
''What part of 'leave my stuff alone' do you not understand?!'' Michael screamed with a high-pitched voice as he threw his now red bleached, pink workers t-shirt at me. ''There's no way I'm wearing a pink shirt at the cinema, a Friday night! There will be lots of people here tonight and they'll think I'm weird.''
''But Michael you are weird.'' I coughed and motioned my eyes at his worn out, bleached hair. ''If this was a month ago, your hair would've matched the shirt.''
He pulled a hand through his darkblonde pointy hair and ruffled it the slightest.
I couldn't even count all the haircolors Michael have had the last couple of years on my hands. He was the type of guy who would dye his hair pink over a night, just because he was bored and tired of his old color. So since Michael used to color his hair so often, and because it had become so thin by all the possible untrustworthy coloring, I had prevailed him to let it rest for a while. So he dyed it dark blonde like his natural haircolor, for it to stay like that for a time ahead. I had warned him several times, that if he wouldn't stop by any time soon his hair would start falling of from all the various unnatural stuff he was putting in it.''It's not the same thing okay?'' Michael hissed at me as he turned around, heading towards the staff exit's door. Even though he was upset, I knew he'd forget me. It wasn't the first time I played a prank at my friend.
''And where do you think you're going?!'' I said as I sat up in the chair normally. ''You can't leave me alone Michael, both you and I know that there will be lots of people here at anytime soon! Can't you take a joke..?''
''Well you should've thought about that a little bit earlier, shouldn't you?'' Michael pouted at me as he put on his jacket. He was such a little kid sometimes. ''I'll be back in a minute or two!''
I rolled my eyes at him, as I knew that the building we both lived in was 30 minutes from here and that Michael wasn't the type to rush. ''Well just hurry the frick up!'' I screamed back at him.
Left all alone I plumped back on the chair that I'd just stood up from and sighed. What a fun night at work this would be.Half an hour passed with me helping an old couple with the tickets to the romantic movie that would be shown tonight and a bunch of 14 year olds who wanted to buy candy. Suddenly, I received a text message from Michael who said that he had missed the bus that went back to work, and that he would be late.
''You got to be kidding me..'' I said to myself as I watched the time on my phone that showed 8.30 pm. Soon there would be lots of people streaming in like a river who wanted to have fun at the cinema, on a Friday night like this. Now I had to deal with everything myself just because he missed the bus.
I took a red cherry lollipop and sneaked it in underneath my skirt in secret, when I felt myself starting to get irritated and feeling sorry for myself. There was usually nothing else to do when people didn't need service, so Michael and I always ate of the candy and popcorn inside of the ticket booth when nobody was watching to entertain ourselves. I would often ask myself why I even started to work at the cinema in the first place. But I needed the money and there wasn't that many other jobs that were offered to a young eighteen year old girl.
