"shit." avrielle sighed as she pulled out of her drive way. "shit shit shit. way to be late on the first fucking day of school. really great way to kick off the year." she muttered as she screamed around a corner, ignoring a stop sign. she pulled down her sunglasses and punched on the radio, turning up her favorite band to drive to. her vintage car sped down the California roads, between lines of palm trees. her red pink hair blew around her face as she sang along to the black keys. after several more ignored stop signs are many more swears, she screeched into the parking lot of her new highschool. avrielle flipped down the tiny vanity mirror and fixed her hair, letting out another sigh.
"whatever." she groaned, kicking the door open.
"doesn't even matter." she grabbed her shoulderbag, covered with band pins and captain america references, and headed for the doors. as she walked she pushed her sunglasses up into her thick strawberry hair, and looked around her new school.
there were lots of groups forming already. the jocks, the nerds, the skaters and the stoners. she glanced over them all while she walked, before her eyes came to settle on one girl in particular. she was tall and thin with a perfectly unruly mess of shoulder length caramel hair. she was wearing high waited shorts and a black and white striped shirt, with strappy golden sandals.
"ugh." avrielle sighed. suddenly she felt a little self conscious about her choice of dress; a tame impala tee shirt tucked into burgundy shorts with black converse.
she slowed her pace so she could observe the other girl more. she stood with the group that was decidedly the hipster Cali nerd kids. they all had glasses with thick frames and looked like they were ready to go to an urban outfitters shoot. the tall girl stood and laughed with her friends as avrielle walked closer. it seemed like she was the center of attention, all eyes on her.
"should I say hi?" she wondered. "no. I just got here. just. just walk past her and don't trip. that's a good start." she put her head down and shuffled past, fidgeting with the strap on her bag. she glanced over at the girl one last time before she entered the school, and nearly tripped.
"She's like a fucking model." thought avrielle as she pushed open the doors.
"wow. this year is going to be. interesting."
