Bam. Bam. Bam.
There it is again. Why do this to me? It's a weekend!
Bam. Bam. Bam.
This time there’s a voice too. It sounds kinda irritated. “Come on, wake up! We are going to miss the plane! Jay please! I've been practically banging your door down for days now!”
Again. Bam. Bam. Then something I didn't expect...silence. What happened to the angry voice?
Maybe now he will leave me alone and I can cuddle back into my plush-covered feather pillow and fall back into the wonderful world of dreams…
The next thing I know, someone is in my room yanking my comforter and blankets off of my bed, groaning in frustration. “Jay, seriously? Do you have to do this to me today? Come on, I thought it would be easier for you to wake up this morning. You promised last night. Well anyways, now that you're awake, I'll need you to get on your clothes for the plane ride. There is a cup of yogurt and an energy bar waiting by the coffee pot for you. I'll go ahead and put your bags into the Jeep, okay? We need to leave within fifteen minutes or I'll have to buy plane tickets for another flight, so hurry up, okay? My bank account wouldn't want me to do that…”
I hear the voice, and its chuckling, fade away and the door click closed. Now to struggle out of my bed, get a quick shower, and put on my favorite outfit all in less than fifteen minutes. I looked at my clock as I rolled out of a permanent part of my life--my queen sized bed--and almost jump out of my skin. It's November fourth! I instantly wake up and run around my bedroom like a madman even though it's 3:40 AM, simultaneously trying to turn on the shower, unplug and pack my hair supplies and makeup, and throw my hair into a messy bun.
When I get downstairs, exactly thirteen minutes and forty-three seconds later, my dad is standing near the breakfast nook and talking to our housekeeper. I only catch snippets of the conversation, but from what I gather, he's reiterating all the things she's supposed to do while we are gone. I think he's worrying too much; Mabel had started working for us right out of high school and knew all the workings and runnings of my house even better than I did.
Mabel was probably in her mid thirties, and really smart, but she didn't go to college because she couldn't afford it and frankly didn't want to go. Now, she probably has enough money to at least start an online degree, but she loves working for my dad--he's a nice boss and he pays well--so she stays. She has mousy brown hair with natural beach waves and doe brown eyes and she is super impassioned about everything she does. She acts like the mother I never remembered and we have hour long conversations after her shift ends at least thrice a week.
When she saw me, she squealed and ran over to me, saying, “Oh my gosh, Jessie! I can't believe this trip is starting today! I am so excited for you and you are gonna have so much fun! I'm gonna miss you like crazy while you're gone but oh this is so exciting and you have to send me pictures and tell me all about the things you do and bring me back some authentic Polish clogs!” That's another thing about Mabel, she starts to ramble when she gets really excited about something.
When she pauses to take a breath, I hurry to interrupt, “Mabel, you know I definitely will send you pictures! And I'll tell you about everything you want to know when I call you every week like we decided. And, Mabel, why do you want Polish clogs? Aren't clogs from Holland? I don't think we are going to Holland, Mabel. I'm sorry. But I'll bring you back something else don't worry!”

Don't forget to vote/comment/share if you like this story!
