CHAPTER NINETEEN: Divided We Fall
After we all change into our uniforms, we follow Steve's lead as he heads towards the chopper. Clint pointed us in the right direction and told us it was running and ready to take off.
As Steve approaches the craft, the helicopter sputters out and stalls. A small electronic device hooks itself onto the blades, the cause of the disruption. When I look up, I see Tony flying into the airport. Both he and Rhodey land in front of the chopper.
I throw out my arm to block anyone from following further, keeping the small group out of sight, behind the airport columns.
"What is it?" Bucky asks in a whisper.
"Tony," I reply, my eyes head. "And Rhodey." I turn towards Sam and Bucky. "If they're here, then there's a Quinjet nearby. Find it. Report back as soon as you do."
Sam nods and turns to fly low and quiet through the airport, staying out of sight. Bucky looks down at me, concern all over his face. "Will you be okay?" he asks.
I nod, stepping up on my tip-toes to place a kiss on his cheek. "I have backup. Go."
He nods, then turns to jog after Sam. I wave Clint and Wanda to follow me as we circle around to the other side of the airport, a place where I can see Steve's face and the back of Team Tony. It's the exact opposite place they'd expect us to be.
While we jog, I clink my com. "Scott, you in place?"
I hear a grunt, then his reply. "Yep! All good. Just hangin' out on Cap's shield. No big deal. Hey, this thing's pretty comfortable."
"Stay there," I reply. "We're on the west side of the building, right in front of you."
"I see you. I'm waving!"
"Don't give yourself away, you bloody idiot."
"Oh...right."
"Wow, it's so weird how you run into people at the airport," Tony says from inside his Iron-Man suit. He retracts his helmet, revealing his face. "Don't you think that's weird?"
"Definitely weird," Rhodey agrees.
"Hear me out, Tony," Steve pleads. "That doctor, the psychologist, he's behind all of this."
I see T'Challa, the Black Panther, jump over a vehicle and land to the side of the opposing parties. "Captain," he nods.
"Your Highness," Steve returns the gesture.
"Anyway," Tony continues, "Ross gave me thirty-six hours to bring you in. You and your little soiree. That was twenty-four hours ago. Can you help a brother out?"
Steve firms his position. "You're after the wrong guy."
"Your judgment is askew," Tony fires back. "Your old war buddy killed innocent people yesterday--"
"--And there are five more super-soldiers just like him. I can't let the doctor find them first, Tony. I can't."
"Steve..."
Steve turns sharply, seeing Natasha enter from another part of the airport. She's in her Black Widow uniform, ready for a fight. I know she told Steve that she might have to play the bad guy to convince Tony she didn't betray them, but I never thought it would come to this.
