"The reason people find it so hard to be happy is that they always see past the better than it was, the present worse than it is, and the future less resolved than it will be." - Marcel Pagnol
My aunt, and Uncle were making breakfast the next morning when I walked downstairs.
That made me very suspicious that something was going on. Besides that, Uncle Doa never asked why I was staying with them for the summer. I first assumed that if he found out I was staying here, he'd get me kicked out.
But no, here they were smiling and giggling with each other like the most perfect happiest married couple in all of Orlando. Well they weren't.
It was nice they cooked breakfast for me and everything but, they were really creeping me out. Besides, all I really liked to eat in the morning was my Cinna toast O's.
I mean did anyone notice my Uncles absence? Aunt Maria didn't seem to.
When Jayson walked downstairs he looked at his parents like they were crazy, and than looked at me. I shrugged and grabbed the box of Cinna toast O's out of the cabinent and some milk from the refrigerator. Uncle Dao noticed, and made me put it back. Now not only were they being creepy, but also very irritating.
Jayson banged his fist into the table making the whole room go quiet.
"What the heck is going on here?" He yells.
"What are you talking about?" My aunt asks.
My Uncle Dao leans over the table, knife in his hand and waves it in Jaysons face.
"Watch your mouth, son."
My heart pounds. For a moment I almost think that my Uncle is going to stab Jayson. But he puts it down on the table, and gives Jayson one last glare before turning around and flipping the half cooked pancake.
"I wasn't finished." Jayson hisses.
Just when I thought everything was going to cool down, the room heated up again. I should've jumped up and said something. I knew Uncle Dao had left some tension at this house, and something was just waiting to come undone. And I just had to be in the middle of it.
"How can you just all of the sudden not be here for me, and Mom. I mean seriously dad, you spend more time hanging around people from work than you do with your own family. And than you come back and expect us to know you?"
My Uncles reaction at first is shocked, and than embarrassed. But than of course he goes right into a rage, and flips Jaysons chair over, making him hit the ground hard.
I sit and watch in disbelief. I search my aunts face for any sympathy, disapointment, or shame. She just stands near the stove, with a spatula in her hand, and a pancake burning behind her.
This was a bad situation. It was way too early for this.
Why couldn't I just have a peaceful breakfast happily with my Cinna toast O's?
"Do you know who I am?" Uncle Dao says hollering over Jayson. "I'm your father, I feed you, and pay for this house!"
Jayson tries to get back up but Uncle Dao keeps knocking him down with his foot. Jayson winces in pain everytime. I have to grit my own teeth to watch.
If I didn't do something Uncle Dao was going to crush Jayson who was already gasping for breath. I glance at Aunt Maria. She was obviously not going to do anything standing there motionless like that.
