Hermione Granger sat quietly in her office as she took a sip of her hot coffee. Her messy brown hair hung low at her shoulders, and her chocolate coloured eyes scanned over the daily prophet. The headlines read: Hermione Granger and Ronald Weasley suffer a tragic break up.

Hermione quickly balled the newspaper up and threw it down into the trash. She had been trying to forget about Ron. He had broken her heart. She thought of him as a coward. Ron had left Hermione because apparently to him she was not good enough.

She lifted her gaze from her clean desk and looked up at the door. The newly married, Ginny Potter had walked in.

"Morning Hermione. How are you?" Ginny asked.

"I'm wonderful," Hermione replied sarcastically. "Congratulations, again, on the wedding! I'm so happy for you!" she said cheerfully.

"Thank you. You know Ron is an idiot, and you deserve so much more. Don't worry it will be fine." Ginny said. She looked around the room, and cleared her throat before saying, "Er, I came to tell you someone's in the lobby waiting for you."

"Well, tell them that whatever it is can wait."

"Hermione, I understand that you're still upset, but they said it can't wait."

"Fine, let them in." Hermione glanced back down at her desk to make sure that everything was in its right place. Ginny quickly left the room and came back followed by Draco Malfoy. His cold eyes darted around the room and his platinum blonde hair was combed to the side. His cold gaze finally met Hermione's warm one.

"I'm going to go see what's happening at the sports department. See you." Ginny said before quickly walking out of the room.

Draco looked at Hermione for a moment before holding up a pile of papers.

"Granger."

"What do you want, Malfoy?"

"I need your h-h-help." Draco pushed himself to say. Hermione looked at him surprised.

"Excuse me? Say that again."

"Granger, I think you heard me the first time. Please don't make me say it again." Draco turned his head towards the floor. Hermione saw in his eyes that he actually did want her help.

"Fine, what do you need help with and why are you asking me?" Hermione said. She kept her voice at a typical tone. Hermione kept her eyes locked on Draco, who had looked up at her question.

"Well, as much as I hate to admit it you really are the brightest witch of our age and I really do fear that we may actually have something in common," Draco replied coldly.

"So, you just came to tell me that we have something in common?" Hermione asked, now confused. Draco scoffed.

"Granger, Granger, Granger. You really are an insufferable know it all, and that's why I need your help with an alchemy project."

"So, you're going to use me! I'm not going to help you, Malfoy!"

"No, no, no, no, no. I'm saying that I need you to help as in, we need to work together on this."

"Well, find someone else to help you Malfoy! I'm not going to help you, and don't make me say it again."

"Really." Draco raised one eyebrow and crossed his arms over his chest.

"What? What makes you think that you're going to change my mind?"

"Well, number one, this might be something that will actually interest you. Number two, you will be working with one of the most accomplished alchemists of our time." Malfoy explained.

"And who would that be? And what will we be doing?" Hermione furrowed her brow. She and Draco made direct eye contact, and he pointed at himself.

"Malfoy? I don't believe you. You're lying." Hermione stood up. "I won't work with you!"

"You don't even know what the project is. You have to come with me and I'll show you."

"How do I know if I can trust you or not?"

"Easy. You don't know. You just will have to wait and see."

Hermione hesitated for a moment. She was on the verge of curiosity when she nodded. Draco handed her a small letter and left without another word.
