Hermione followed Draco into Malfoy Manor. The heat warmed Hermione's body as she entered. She continued to follow Draco up to the dining room. Food was already set out onto the table and Draco pulled out a chair next to the front of the table for Hermione to sit in.

"Draco," Hermione's voice was so soft and welcoming that it made Draco's heart flutter to hear her saying his name.

"What?" Draco replied.

"Why? What made you change sides during the battle of Hogwarts?" Hermione questioned.

Draco hesitated for a minute. He wasn't expecting to be asked that question.

"Hermione, I didn't want to be on the dark side. I never wanted to do the things I did. I have tried so hard to make up for them." Draco had lost his appetite. He stood up and walked over to the dark windows. He didn't want Hermione to see his emotions.

"What do you mean, you tried? Aren't you still trying?"

"My father would kill me if he knew. I'm the real reason why my father failed the dark lord. My whole family could have been killed because of me." Draco's eyes were now showing tears, as he faced Hermione who was now standing beside him.

"Draco, I don't know what you're talking about, but it's not your fault! Don't blame yourself! It's over now!"

"Hermione, I have never told a soul this, but I'm sure you remember our second year at Hogwarts."

Hermione nodded, as she examined Draco carefully. She had barely ever seen him so up close. His face was gaunt and was scarred by pain, his cold eyes were shadowed and his face pale.

"Remember in Florish and Blott's, before the school year started?" Draco waited a moment before speaking again, "I heard my father talking the night before, about a basilisk being hidden in the chamber of secrets.

"When I was at Florish and Blott's I just happened to come across a book about magical creatures, and I found a page about basilisks. I didn't want my father knowing what I was up to, so I tore that page out of the book and took it, and, well, I'm sure you can figure out the rest." Draco finished.

Hermione's jaw dropped.

"I went to the library and I found a page on basilisks sitting on the table. It was torn out of a book, and it was exactly what I was looking for." Hermione replied. Her eyes were tearing up with surprise. She had no idea why, but she flung her arms around Draco's neck and kissed his cheek gently.

"Draco, thank you. After all these years I can't believe you were so brave." Hermione whispered in his ear.

Draco felt his blood rushing to his face. He knew he was blushing, but he didn't care. He was with her, Hermione, the only person he had ever trusted more than anyone else.

"Hermione Granger, if it wasn't for you, I would still be living a life of misery. Because of you, the Voldemort is gone." Draco said calmly, as he looked into Hermione's warm chocolate eyes. He had never felt so loved by anyone other than family.

Hermione leaned up higher to him and placed a soft kiss on Draco's lips. The kiss would change everything, and yet no one realized that. One kiss was all it took to change the entire course of the lives of two people. The kiss may have lasted hours before Hermione and Draco pulled away from each other. They were both starstruck with what had just happened.

"Er... It's getting late, we should eat and I'll let you be on your way." Draco said coolly, as he walked back to the table followed by Hermione.

They ate in silence and bade a goodnight. Only until the next day would they face each other again, and only until the next day they would have to face the consequences.
