I woke up to yelling and screaming. This isn't anything I wasn't used to. Being in the foster home, children would argue endlessly, fighting over nothing of importance. Our caretakers would often ignore the beefing and only intervene when things were getting out of hand.
I rubbed my eyes and got up slowly. My head was pounding and I tried to grasp everything that happened overnight. Glancing around the room, I saw paintings hanging on the walls and fancy decor. I wasn't at Malby's Foster Home anymore. I was in the living room of my father's mansion.
My father's mansion. That felt weird to say. It felt even weirder to be in a mansion. Pushing myself to get up, I almost slapped Dylan in the face. Everything was coming back to me now as I saw him hugging onto a Chardonnay bottle, fast asleep. I stretched, and noticed a glass of water and some pills next to it.
Overlooking the pills, I took a huge gulp of the water and drank until the glass was empty. I never been too big on the idea of pills, especially ones I wasn't familiar with. When Dylan and I first started out, we used to sell Mollies and Xanax to the kids at our local high school. We were indeed their plug, but after seeing how addicted and mentally unstable they got, I swore off pills for life.
The house seemed bigger than I remembered. Walking towards the noise, I made a mental note to thoroughly tour this magnificent architecture. The hard liquor served last night was finally beginning to wear off. Was it Grey Goose or SKYY Vodka? I can't even remember. All I know was that I had a good ass time.
"You don't know what's best for him!"
"And you think your conniving, slutty ass do?!" I heard Ruben say. "I didn't even want you back here as yet. Yo ass better not have told him anything that would have him running for the hills!"
My parents were in the massive kitchen. I propped nearby so I could eavesdrop everything they were saying, expectantly for some answers about this whole reunion. I peered around just a bit, so I could see a small view of the scene.
My mother was pacing back and forth with great distress and Ruben was just leaning on the island, sipping on a beverage. He was completely nonchalant towards my mother's presence.
"You will respect me!" my mother snapped. "I don't care how upset you are, but I demand some gratitude! I carried that boy! It was your selfish ass that made us give him up! You can't even fathom the amount of grief I endured since he was dragged from my arms. You monster!"
My eyes widen, surprised. Ruben walked past her, acting as if she was invisible. He poured some more liquid into his glass and then twirled the glass in a circle. Then he proceeded to down the whole thing.
My mother picked up the bottle my father poured from. While Ruben was titling back his drink, she attempted to hit my father in the head with the bottle. I thought about interjecting but Ruben caught her arm in the nick of time, laughing nastily.
"We've been married for years, Veronica. I know all your evil moves." Ruben said, smiling. "Besides, how would you explain to your little Chancey that you did something to hurt his father? Imagine all the additional questions you'd have to answer. However would you deal with that?"
"Simple." she replied hastily. "I'd tell Chance you deserved it for all your wicked ass ways. Maybe our family would be better off without you."
I spotted Dylan from the corner of my eye and motioned him to come over. He tip toed his way and stood next to me with questionable eyes. I shushed him before he even got the opportunity to say anything. Ain't no way was he going to ruin this moment for me. I was already hearing too much.
We peered around the corner again, and Ruben was sitting on the island, staring into space. Veronica was now sitting on a stool, breathing out in defeat. This lasted a few seconds before Ruben sighed, looking at my mother longingly. He jumped off the countertop, and rested his hand on Veronica's shoulder, squeezing it. She looked up at him and smiled, taking her hand and placing it on his. Dylan and I made a disgusted face at each other. What kinda make up fuck shit was that?
